The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-11-23, Page 5Thanks Dear Editor, I wish to thank the Signal -Star staff for their fine coverage of high school football this year. On many occasions Joanne Buchanan, Dave Sykes and Jeff Seddon have braved the cold and wet weather to get the pictures we have seen in past weeks. I know that the boys who play the game and the coaches appreciate your efforts. One can't mention your football coverage without sincere thanks to "T.D." for the many hours of writing he does on our behalf. I know that our school sports program would -not get the ex- cellent coverage it does without the extra effort of so many people. Yours truly, Bill Garrow No brother Dear Editor, To Whom it may Concern: No — I do not have a brother. . Walter Mcllwain is my cousin and I'm proud of it. Everett is my father. Stanley (known to me as. Uncle Bill and to some others as "Mac") is Walter's father. I am sure you have it all straightened out now as to who belongs to whom. Sarnia N7T 7T1 (519) 344-8248 Needs info Dear Editor, In April 1862 a young man from Goderich, Alexander Robertson, left on an overland journey to British Columbia's .Cariboo goldfields. He was about 25 years- old, ,; a - civil engineer and reportedly the son of the Goderich gaol keeper. Robertson joined a group called the OverlanderS of '62 and GEAR EDITOR made his way across Canada to the head- waters off the Fraser River. There, he and a few companions made canoes and set out on the turbulent flow. Alexander was one who did not make it. He died on September 2 from drowning. His companions all wrote about him, remarking on what a fine young man he was. I am writing a book on this group of men and would 'like to find out more about Robertson and his family, and,;'his overland companions. In this book, I am anxious to give as much information as possible on each in- dividual, for they should be recorded as'Jmore than names on a list. As your newspaper has been publishing since before that period, I am wondering if you or any of your readers, might have information on Alexander Robertson or his family. I am looking for anything I can find in the way off letters, clippings, obituary notices, family stories and memories. If you or your readers do have information, I would appreciate hearing from them. Any material I receive will be photocopied and returned -promptly. Please contact me at: 549 Ioco Road, Port Moody, B.C. V3H2W3. Thank you. Yours sincerely Richard Wright Take care Dear Editor, The latter part of November and the month of December are exciting times for most. With Christmas coming, there's the shopping to do for those special people; the -secrets kept from the children and the an- -t'ticipation caused by them. Parties are a part ofthe season also. At children's parties, soda pop i5 served and at adult parties, silly pop is served and the end result is that you can't tell the children from the adults except for size. It's good, psychiatrists tell us, to act like kids once and a while - it relieves tension etc. Driving at this time of the year iss a little dif- ferent also. Considering the number,of parties and how they leave us, it's not too difficult to see why accidents increase with more people out for Christmas shopping and partying. Next comes the unhappy times of the Christmas -New Years season for those involved in accidents and their... family members. Picture yourself involved in an accident (because it could happen). You are put in a hospital or a funeral home. Was the party worth all this? How would your family feel -or end up? You are arrested for impaired driving. Your licence is automatically suspended for a minimum of three months with a possible $1,000 fine or a jail term or both. All of these things are real and happen every day but more so during the holiday season. From the Ontario Provincial Police, hav good safe holiday. Don't mix alcohol with driving and risk your life or someone else's. Watch out for the other guy. R. W. Wilson, P.C.
