Long study has
revealed several reasons
why adolescents
misbehave. Sometimes it
is on a dare; for ex-
citement; to avoid work;
to buck the establish-
ment; to draw attention
to one's sexuality; or for
instant gratification.
For instance, young
people involved in van-
dalism, drugs and run-
ning away from home are
searching for ex-
citement; those who are
promiscuous, or those
who wear, provocative
clothing, smoke or enjoy
obscenity_ are unsure of
their sexuality; drug
addiction, heavy
smoking, alcoholism, etc.
are symptoms of the
desire' for instant
gratification.
A DEMOCRATIC
APPROACH
There are three dif-
ferent approaches to
discipline, according to
Mrs. Cassel and some
other eminent persons.
One ' is the old
authoritative method
where it was proven that
children learned the most
but forgot the quickest.
Another is the permissive
method by which children
learn nothing. A third,
---,and, the..,..bas,t,.....: was•..:.,, th.e
democratic system by
which students learned a
little more slowly but
retained the information
longer.
The democratic
process was determined
by Mrs. Cassel to be the
ultimate - and involves a'
mutual exchange of ideas
with an eye to problem
solving . and decision
making.
In a film which rounded
out Mrs. Cassel's
presentation in the af-
ternoon, it was stated,
"Family life is still the
cornerstone of our
modern world."
The sessions urged
teachers to apply .what
they already know,- and
draw from the knowledge
of the experts as well as
to attempt to work in
close co-operation with
parents.
All this, along with a
sense of humor, will help
teachers, parents and
other adults "break down
the barriers" between
adolescents and older
people ... "If there really
'are barriers".
Guelph says
Nov. rates bad
The conception rates of
dairy cows bred by ar-
tificial insemination are
lower in the winter than
in the summer, according
to a survey by the
University of Guelph.
It concluded that poor
conception rates begin in
November, and remain
low until late spring.
Conception rates are
lowest in December and
January when they
average 10 percent lower
than during 'peak months.
Dairy producers can
---- prevent ---this- slump_.... in
conception rates with
good management and
nutritious rations, says
Blair Murray, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture
and Food dairy cattle
specialist.
"Poor reproductive
performance is related to
winter management,"
says Mr. Murray. "Herds
housed and managed in
the same manner all\year
show no significant
seasonal variation in
conception rates."
To 'ensure proper
nutrition, producers
should feed high quality
forages, and grain mixes
with the proper balance
of energy and protein.
"Feeding excess
energy to cows that are
dry or in late lactation
will make them overfat,
resulting in poor con-
ception rates and in-
creased health problems
after calving," he says.
Producers sllould also
provide calcium,
phosphorus and sufficient
quantities of trace
minerals. These
minerals, which vary
depending on forages
used, should be inciuded
in the grain mix or feed
bunk.
