"There are corpses all over my house," Mrs, Arlene Whiteman of
Goderich can tell you. The corpses she is ,referring to are the
porcelain bodies of the dolls she makes as a hobby. These doll
parts will be strung together from the inside with cord and fitted
with clothes sewn and designed by Mrs. Whiteman. The old-
fashioned styled dolls sell anywhere from $30 up to $340 for a 16-
piece.ball jointed one. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)
Making dolls the way Mrs. Arlene Whiteman of Goderich makes them, is no
simple task. She starts by making her own molds and follows through to
designing and sewing the dolls' clothes. Mrs. Whiteman studied dress design
in Detroit for seven years but since there was no call for anything along
these lines in Goderich, her training evolved into crafts of all types --
weaving, decoupage, dried flower arranging and making rag and porcelain
dolls. Her hobbies always seem to turn into businesses, she says. (Photo by

Bean board
• from page 7A
mendations, the report
suggested the Board sell
all no. 4 beans directly
from the Board to the end
user and that beans
should be sold directly to
fringe marketing areas,
he said.
"1 agree -with that point
of the report but I don't
think it went far enough,"
said Mr. Durand. "Right
now I don't think we
would have any problem
if the board sold directly.
We wouldn't be in the
mess we are in today if
the Board sold all beans
directly.
Without a marketing
board, the alternative
would be a free
marketing ' system and
• during the last three
years, Michigan
producers have fared
much better than
Canadian growers under
free marketing, he said.
Phil is concerned about
bean marketing -practices
to the point that hexhas
reduced his white bean
acreage to 110 acres from
the 160-170 acre crop he
and two sons formerly
grew on their RR2 Zurich
farm.
"Many producers are
opposed to any type of
marketing board but this
is a different situation,"
said Mr. Durand.

doll and plans to make
these -dolls soon too.
Before making por-
celain dolls, Mrs.
Whiteman made rag dolls
for 15 years and says she
must have over 500
patterns for various rag
dolls.
"I like dolls. I guess I
never grew up," . she
laughs.
STUDIED
DRESS DESIGN
Mrs. Whiteman
graduated from a
technical high school in
Detroit after studying
dress designing for seven
years. After moving to
Canada with her husband
27 years ago, she never
got a chance to do
-anything -'that directly
involved this training.
"There was no call for
what I did here so
eventually my training
evolved into crafts," she
says.
Mrs. Whiteman
describes herself as an
a.grless-iv-e,-positive
thinker who does just
about anything and
everything. Her hobbies
include weaving
(although she has
tapered off in this area
having only one of her
four floor looms left);
decoupage; and dried
flowers.
"I'm like a machine
when I start producing
things," she laughs.
Mrs. Whiteman could
also be classed as an
amateur interior
decorator. She wouldn't
have a new house, she
says. Instead she has
fixed up three old houses
including her present one
on Church Street. She is
also fiii'ing'up the garage
and transforming it into a
shop where she can
display and sell her
crafts. She once tran-
sferred a big old barn into
a sote when she live on
the Mill Road and she had
a rag doll shop when she
lived -in Colborne
Township.
"All my crafts start out
as hobbies and develop
into businesses," she
says. "Supplies can be
high priced so I make my
crafts pay for them-
selves. I wouldn't want
my husband to pay for
my follies. He's only a
working man," she
smiles.
Mrs. Whiteman is easy
going about her latest
venture. She doesn't, plan
to do that much ad-
vertising when her new
shop is completed. Her
old customers will find
her, she says. She has
always liked her life in
Canada. The pace is
slower and people have
time for people, she says.
Meanwhile, says Mrs.
Whiteman, her two grown
children are gone from
home and she maintains
that she is as free as a
bird to pursue her bob-
bies all day long. And wblo
knows_ what she will take
on next.
