After the goal the

The Sailors scored their
second victory of the
weekend as they got third
period goals from Paul
Kelly and Ron Sowerby to
edge Mildmay 4-3.
The teams played a
scoreless first period
before Wayne Rau put
Goderich into the lead.
after converting a pass
from Graham Hamilton
and Dan Duncan.
Mildmay tied the score
with a goal at 6.49 of the
second period but
Sowerby scored a late
second period goal to pull
the Sailors back into- a
one -goal lead. Each team
scoffed two goals in the
final period.
Kelly and Sowerby

for Goderich while Bill
Peddigrew and Bob
Wilkinson replied for
Mildmay.
Jim Fr`ayne played
goal for Goderich and
blocked 21 shots and
many of those saves
came while Goderich was
playing shorthanded as
they took 11` minor
penalties to two for
Mildmay.
The Sailors put their
unbeaten string on the
line Friday night in a
game against Mount
Forest at 8:30 p.m. at the
Goderich and District
Community Centre.
Mount Forest should
provide keen opposition
as, they ,re undefeated in ._
three league contests.

The Goderich Green
and Parent Midgets kept
scorekeeper Mike

night here when they

hockey.
The high -flying local
midgets got three goals in
the first period, added

and banged in ten goals in
the final period,to turn
the game into a rut.
Mike Hodges had four
goals for the Green and
Parent squad and. picked
up two assists. Rob
John Doherty,
manager of the Goderich
Sailors, asked the
Goderich Recreation
Board at its last meeting
to reconsider its policy
for a gate split with- the
Intermediate C hockey
club. •
Doherty, who is also a
member of the rec board,
told the board he wanted
to change hats and speak
as manager of the hockey
club. He said the club
"was not exactly happy"
with the arrangement.the
-recreation board had
decided on and asked that
the Sailors be charged the
sane • fee as all other
Chiba using the Goderich
• ,The board demanded a
70'- 30, gate. split with the
Sailors, the 70 percent
going to the rec board.
That policy is only in
effect if the board's
percentage of the,gate is
greater than $100. If not
the Sailors will be
charged a flat rate of $100
a Week' for the five hours
ice time used for home
games and practice.
Doherty said the
Sailors were "really
trying to make the team
as money making as
possible and were not
getting treated as fair as
other users of the arena".
He said the Goderich
Merchants were not
working with a gate split
policy with the board but
rather were being
charged a flat fee for ice
time used:
"There isn't another
team in Goderich or ice
user here that is getting
that treatment and ' we
(the Sailors) wonder
why," he told the board.
"We would like to go back
to the 60 -40 split or a flat
ice time fee. We don't feel
we should have to do both
when no other users do."
Board chairman Mary
Donnelly told Doherty
that the main reason for
the fees charged the
Sailors was because the
board lost $1.5001ast year
by not charging the
Sailors under a system
that would guarantee that
all ice tinie used by the
club was paid for. Don-
nelly added that the
Merchants were not
being charged under that
formula because they
were a new team in
Goderich and ,the board
did not have any idea

what kind of fan support
they would get. She added
that if the Merchants
began to draw large
crowds the board may
have to look at a similar
gate split the Sailors are
working with now.
Doherty said the
Sailors had a "hell of a
good hockey team"
claiming it was the best
in the six year history of
the club. He said the
board stood to make
money off. the gate split
even at 60 - 40 estimating
that crowds could
number six or seven
hundred for Sailor home
games later in the
season.
"We're willing to go
along with any decision of
the board if others are
getting the same shake,"
said Doherty.
Rec director Mike
Dymond told the board
the Sailors may have a
valid point considering
the fee structure for the
Merchants. But he ex-
plained to the Sailor
manager that the board
was a little leery working
a gate split with the
Merchants because they
were a new team. He said
if they drew larger
crowds-; and the arena
staff hadmore cleaning
up to do after the games
the board would have to
consider charging more
money through a gate
split.
Arena manager Chuck
Jewell told the board that
many towns with junior
clubs using the arena for
home games are charged
hefty fees for arena use
because of ice time used
and because they tie up a
dressing room for an
entire season. He said the
clubs are charged more
for ice time because in
many cases they operate
two week camps for
tryouts and then have
sole use of a dressing
room and those services
demand greater fees.
Jewell commented that
as a taxpayer, , in
Goderich, not as the
arena manager, his
feeling would be that he
"wouldn't want to sub-
sidize any club in this
town".
The board told Doherty
it would \stick with the 70-
30 gate split for at least
another month allowing
the Sailors to get two or
three home games under
their bplt before
reassessing the situation.
Suns win
first two
games
The Suncoast Suns
opened the season with a
pair of victories in the
atom league last weekend
by, defeating Listowel
twice, 3-2 and 6-4..
In the Sunday game,
two late . third period
goals by Scott Garrow
gave the Suns a 3-2 vic-
tory and overcame a 2-0
deficit to win their league
opener. Dave Jewell
scored early in the third
period to reduce the
deficit to one goal to get
the team on their way.
Dave Telford and Kevin
Talbot drew assists on the
Garrow goals.'
On Monday the two
teams met again in
Listowel and the Suns
jumped out to a 5-0 lead
and then held on to a 6-4
win. Dave Jewell had
three goals for Goderich
while Dave Telford had
two and Scott Garrow
one. Todd Gilchrist
picked up three assists.
The locals were a far
different team in this
game than the one they
played Sunday. Outside
of a five minute lapse in
the third period they
played strong two-way
hockey to earn the vic-
tory.
The Suns next action is
in Walkerton Saturday
and they return home on
Sunday for a game
against Hanover in a 5
p.m. start.
