attention Saturday afternoon but whatever it was it
earned Tim Reid's jack -o -lantern, centre, first
place in the Suncoast Mall jack -o -lantern contest
sponsored by .the mall ' merchants. Conrad

contest held Saturday in conjunction with the
shopping mall's third birthday celebrations. Steve

Vanastra grant request turned down

Huron County Council
refused to support the
;Vanastra Resource
Centre at its Friday
'session when it received a
request from the centre,
for a $5,000 ,grant. -
The executive com-
mittee of council
recommended that the
grant•request be refused
at the present time
leavirig the resource
centre to operate on a
Canada Works grant of
$26,000.
Executive committee
chairman Ed Oddleifson
told council that Liz
Warren, Chris Martin
and Carol Mcllveen had
appeared before the
committee requesting
financial support. The
money was to be used to
publish 500 copies of a
proposed services in-
formation directory
costing $2,500. and to pay

a part-time worker to

services provided by the
resource centre under the
original Canada Works
grant.
Oddleifson said the
Vanastra group was
working with funds from
a 1978 Canada Works
grant ,and that four
people were drawing pay
out of that grant. He said
,the centre had received
$26,000 for 1979 -and that
money was to pay three
staff members.

They came in all sizes
and shapes. Some were
painted, some were
decorated with leaves,
fake hair and a variety of
vegetables, Some were
happy, some sad and
some angry. There were
25.0 of them, 160 brought
by children between the
ages of five and ten and 90
by children 10 to 15 years
old.
The main mall at
Suncoast Mall was the
scene- Saturday for the
largest display of jack -o -
lanterns ever collected in
one place in the history of
Goderich. A jack -o -
lantern contest_sponsor.ed.
by the merchants at
Suncoast had an over-
whelming response that
demanded that th-ree
• judges carefully examine
250 jack -o -lanterns to
choose six winners.
Rob Taylor, organizer
of the contest held in
conjunction with the third
anniversary of the
shopping mall, said he
was hoping the contest
would. attract ., a large
number of entries' but
never thought it would
attract as many as it did.
He said he thought he
would end up with "egg
on my face" about the
middle of last week when
only a few pumpkins
wee entered in the -
contest but that situation
changed when the jack -o -
lanterns started rolling in
Thursday, Friday and
Saturday.
The contest was
designed to wrap up the
two-week .anniversary
the mall merchants
promoted. Special bir-
thday sales and free
birthday cake and coffee
Friday night preceded
the contest held Saturday
afternoon.
Spectator, most of
which were parents of
contestants, crowded the
mall during the judging
and stayed until the three
winners in each age.
group were announced.
When the winners were
chosen almost all the
jack -o -lanterns entered
were , claimed by their
owners and taken home
to decorate front porches
and front windowson
klallowe'en night.
Ten year old Steve
Young had his effort
picked as winner of the
five to 10 year old division
and Steve. was was- .given . a
$100 bond as first prize.
He had the choice of the
bond or a. television and
at first chose the
television- but later
changed his mind. Nine
year old Tammy Allen
was given second prize, a
pair of skates and six
year old Paul Steep won a
radio -as third prize.
Port Albert
folk home
Mary ' Johnston of
Brantford took ad-
vantage of the nice
weather for another
weekend at her cottage in
Port Albert. A neighbour,
Jessie Collins ac-
companied her.

for the weekend from
London.
Jim Doherty and Rita
Tigert just returned from
a trip to Ireland. While
there, they visited with
their half-sisters at
Ballymoney, County
Antrim.
They also visited the
homestead where their
father was born on Orra
mountain. The original
house is still standing.
They also found the
cemetery with their
grandfather's and uncle's
tombstones.
