TO GLORIFY GOD
ANDgIEN JOY HIM
FOREVER
"And the angel said to
them, "Be not afraid; for
behold, I bring you good
news of great joy which
shall come to all the
people..." St. Luke 2:10.
The old Presbyterian
Catechism says that the
chief end of man is "to
-glorify-• God—and-- - enjoy
Him forever". Perhaps
we know a lot about
glorifying God, but we
still seem to have a great
deal to learn about en-
joying Him!
So much of what passes
for Christianity - even in
this day and age - is so
lugubrious and mournful
that. it bears little
resemblance to the vital
and joyful faith of the
New Testament.
The birth of Jesus was
announced as an event of
"great joy". The first
public event of his
ministry was his at-
tendance at a wedding
celebration (where we
may forget, he turned the
water into wine). Later,
Jesus compared himself
to a bridegroom. There's
no time for mourning!
God's gift is the gift of
joy! (St. Matthew 9:14
and 15).

musicals like "Godspell"
and "-Jesus Christ
Superstar". That's the
appeal in much of today's
rock music: there's a
sense of joy in it which
much of the traditional
music of the church
misses altogether.
Let's start living as if
we really believe that we
have been given the Good
News, the tidings of great
joy; as if we really
believe that Easter
followed Golgotha, and
Victory grew out of
seeming defeat and loss.
Of course, we can't
start living joyfully
unless we, individually,
have a reason for joy.
That means becoming as
little children before the
love of God, letting it in to
purify our lives, to cast
out guilt and gloom, arid
to fill us with a joy which
arises out of a totally new
relationship- with an
indwelling Christ. And
then we shall be given a
new song; whose theme
will be, "I've got the joy
... down in my heart to
stay".
