plant
costs
Major expansions to
the CIBA-Geigy Seeds
Ltd., processing plant at
Cottam, Ontario have
• now been completed at a
cost of $1,5 million.
Officially opened - on
Monday, September 11 by
the Minister of
Agriculture, Eugene F.
Whelan, the ,new ad-
ditions more than double
processing capacity and
in the words of the plant
manager, Murray
Holland, make the
operation at Cottam the
__Inosten_e_rgy effkieot and
economical in Canada.
Seed growers, dealers,
media representatives
and local officials who
Were present at the
opening, toured the entire
operation and had an
opportunity to see the
new drying system (the
only one of its kind in the
industry) in operation.
The new facility serves a
dual purpose since it .is
designed to function both
as a holding area as well
as a drying system.
Unlike conventional
systems which are
operational for only two
months of the year during
the drying process, the
specially designed • bins
make it possible for the
same facilities to be used
as a holding area for
various materials used in
the operation once drying
procedures have been
completed. The dual
purpose operation means
full utilization, for the
• first time in the industry,
of these facilities for 12
months of the year.
Also new is the fully
automated shelling
system which is geared
for an output of 1,200
bushels of shelled corn
per hour.
• New facilities give the
CIBA-Geigy plant the
largest controlled en-
vironment seed corn
storage capacity - in
Canada. In this area too,
innovation in design has
been achieved with a dual
purpose in,mind. Prior to
sizing and bagging, corn
is sorted according to
variety and temporarily
stored in collapsible bins
erected in the storage
area. Once the corn has
been sized and bagged,
the giant bins are
dismantled and removed
and the same facilities
are then used for storing
the bagged corn.
Major innovations and
a significant investment
have gone into an in-
creased sizing and
• bagging capability of the
plant to achieve a level of
300 bushels of (seed corn
per hour.
Innovations also make
the sizing operations the
most energy efficient in
Canada - and en-
vironmentally one of the
cleanest, employing a
process entirely unique to
the industry where the
preheated air being used
in the operation is con-
stantly refiltered and
• recycled, resulting in a
considerable saving in
fuel costs.
With conventional
systems a constant intake .
of fresh air is required.
This in turn demands
more energy as, the air
must always be reheated
to the desired tem-
perature.
The • innovations and
expansions place CIBA-
Geigy Seeds Ltd. in a
position to better serve its
thousands of customer
across Canada from one
Of the largest and
technologically one of the
most advanced seed corn
processing plants in
Canada.

The Ontario Safety
League reminds
motorists that the human
eye takes time to adjust
itself from bright light to
the dark. When leaving a
brightly lit building at
night, wait a few minutes
for your eyes to accustom
themselves to the dim-
mer light before- you
drive.
