What does it mean to "believe"?
BY THE REVEREND
ALFRED FRY
(RETIRED)
The Bible clearly states
in the third chapter of the
Gospel of St. John, verse
16, that "God The Father,
the giver and sustainer of
all life, so loved the
people whom He created,
that He gave His only
begotten. Son, that
whosoever believeth in
Him, should not perish
but would have
everlasting life.
_ This . promise. -does not
call for an academic
sermon as it is self-
explanatory, but what
does "believe" mean?
It does not mean to
"hope for the best". The

word for that is "op-
timism". Neither does it
mean to "trust in luck".
The name for that is
"fatalism". And it cer-
tainly does not mean to
believe in what we know
to be untrue. For that is
nothing else but "ab-
surdity".
How can we best
describe or define it?
We place trust in Jesus
Christ in two ways. First,
-by" accepting Him. Let us
turn to the last book in the
Bible where Jesus says,
"Behold I stand" at the
door and knock, if any
man hear my voice, and
open the door, I will come
in to him and will sup
with him". (Rev. 3-20)
We picture Jesus
standing at the door of a
house, patiently knocking
and waiting to be ad-
mitted. We can also think
of Him standing outside
the door of our heart. Oh
how often has He waited
seeking admission but we
keep Him outside.
I am sure that many
Ministers will agree with
me that many times in
our ministry when
making a house call,
some people would meet
us at the door, but
because they were busy
or had company, they did
not invite us to come in.
Some would -invite us
into the litring room
where we could sit and
chat- At times we might
get into the kitchen and
have a snack or coffee.
.You might even get asked
by the man of the house to
come down into the
basement to see his
workshop At times you
might be asked upstairs
to see the lovely fur-
nished and freshly
painted rooms.
,But one room we were
never invited to enter was
the attic. Perhaps they
felt that this was not
important because they
know how untidy and
messy it can be and this
would shame them.
This reminds us that
our bodies are houses
also. In this house are our
minds, hearts, wills,
memories, appetites and
into this house of ours we
find Jesus seeking ad-
mittance.
So, some people allow
Jesus to come as far as
the door. He is treated in
a rude manner,
recognition? (Yes) but a
quick dismissal. Others
allow Jesus into the living
room where He can
discuss with ,them their
problems. Others invite
Him into the kitchen

where He ` may receive
some offering at their
hands. Or He may be
invited into the basement
where He can examine
the foundation.
But what about the
attic where things of the
past are put away, where
we try to keep out of sight
our mistakes and things
of which we are
ashamed?
So then to accept Jesus
Christ as Saviour and
Lord off our lives, is to
invite Him to come into
the whole of our personal
lives, and clean up,
rearrange and add
whatever He wants. This
calls for a complete
surrender to the will of
God in Christ.
How often did we as
parents, in teaching our
children how to walk,
stand them in the corner
and hold out our hands to
them saying, "Come to
daddy or mummy." They
would step out in faith ,
that we would receive
them.
