Safe driving tips
If you're a left -foot
braker, don't ride the
brake when you're
driving. It may give you a
split second advantage in
stopping, but any
pressure on that pedal
can quickly wear out your
brake linings or heat
them to the point where
they'll be ineffective
when you need them,
states the Ontario Safety
League. Brakes heat up
quickly and the hotter
they get, the less efficient
they are. Brake fade
comes around quickly
when the brakes don't
have a rhaace to cool
down. The 'spurt' driver -

celerates and then
Bert Sootheran of Clinton and Mary Beth Hoy, an orientation and mobility
specialist from the CNIB office in London illustrated the long cane at the CNIB
display in Clinton last Thursday. Nearly 100 people toured through the display
at the Orange Hall. The display, sponsored by the local Bluewater Blind Club,
showed many of the devices available to blind people. (News -Record photo)
Sponsored by the Bluewater Blind Club, the CNIB set up a display in Clinton
last week showing the various devices used by blind DeoDle. Here Gwen Watson
of Clinton, left, looks into a machine called the Visualtex. Claudia Davis an
eye service nurse works with the machine that increases print size 60 times its
original size. (News -Record photo)
CNIB display draws 100
An estimated 75 to 100
people from the county
learned about such
devices as the sonar cane
and the sonagride,
talking book machines
and magnifying lenses
when they attended the
Canadian National
Institute for the Blind
(CNIB) display at the
Orange Hall in Clinton
last Thursday.
Included in the display
wad a demonstration of
the sonar cane. This
expensive instrument
emits three laser beams
in different directions. If
one of these beams is
interrupted, a sound is
produced. Each beam
creates a different sound,
therefore warning the
user of the position of any
object within the cane's
path. Only one such cane
is presently in use in
Canada.
The sonagride is a
small device attached to
the noise piece of a pair of
glasses as well as a small
pair of ear plugs. The
sounds sent out from the
appliance are reflected
and heard by the user.
The pitch of the sound
received falls rapidly as
the user nears an ob-
stacle, thereby warning
him of its presence..
A third method of
providing ° mobility for
blind people was offered
by a member of local
Bluewater Blind Club.
Harold Vodden of Blyth
was on hand to show
visitors his seeing eye
dog; Chipper.
Other special ap-
partatus on display in-
cluded the magnifying
lenses, from ordinary
reading lenses to
projection machines;
talking book machines
and tape recorders;
Braille typewriters and
watches and clocks with
Braille dials.
Along with the display,
the local Kinette group
served tea and gathered
$85 in profits. The money
will be sent to the
Overseas Relief Fund of
the CCB ' and the
Bluewater Club.

Here's son etbing all
motorists should keep in
mind. When - a driver
makes eye contact with a
youngpedestrian about to
cross the street, the
driver knows the dhild
has seen the vehicle and
will wait for it to pass.
Actually, the reverse is
true_ The Ontario Safety
League reports that
studies show that a child
making eye contact with
a driver is sure he has
been seen and that the
driver will stop to let hire
cross.
