Round
Every day, while
driving, little things
happen. I mentioned last
week the kids driving
'round • and 'round The
Square three and four
abreast — something that
really aggravates me —
so today I'm telling a
different story — just a
little one but it HIT me.'
Every week I'll have a
little story on this subject
— so if you have anything
I can use, write it out and
drop it into The Signal-
• Star mail slot with my
name "LOVE MAR-
THA".
Along Victoria Street
yesterday, the car ahead
of me suddenly slowed
and pulled to a stop. I
waited to see what
happened.' A black
squirrel had decidedto
cross the road.
Car LNY 552, a Buick,
stopped for him (or her)
and the squirrel was right
in front of his car but it
suddenly decided to run
back to the curb — and
the young man waited as
it changed its mind.
Thank . you, young man,
for not splashing it all
over the road in front of
me.
Recently I was asked
why the boat whistles had
ceased as the lakers
entered the harbour.
Most people I talked to
didn't realize they were
not sounding and others
said they hadn't stopped.
I figured I had just been
missing them. If you're in
the house with TV going
you don't even hear .the
fire siren — let alone the
boats.
So, I couldn't find
anyone who would know,
for sure, what the
situation is at this trine.
1 saw one of the Takers
being backed into the
rock salt dock 'one
morning, but had not
heard the siren or horn.
With radar they probably
don't need to make a
noise * but do they
realize how many people
rush down to the dock to

giants being turned
around in Snug Harbour
by the three "Little
Toots".
The schedules for the
winter classes at G.D.C.I.
are not quite ready — But
I hope YOU' are ready.
These great classes do a
lot for those who have
enough grit to get out to
them.
I remember, well, one
winter when I decided to
Martha Rathburn ap-
pears weekly in The
Signal -Star
take SHOP. I had a nice
frame that looked quite
simple to make and since
picture frames were
becoming quite ex-
pensive, I decided that
with a little instruction
and the right tools, I
could do it.
Well, we assembled in
the big workshop and I
looked around. No
SMALL machines in
sight. I" had. used small
machines and tools many
times and had no fear of
them but when they
turned on the main switch
to all the machines, I rose
two feet in the air! What a
noise —the like of which I
hadn't heard in 30 years.
Even the gun plant and
the old radiator plant
where I had worked for
some time were not much
noisier.
n
Well, 1 wasn't going to
let anyone know how I.
felt. One of the ladies had
taken shop the previous
winter so she was O.K.
but another little lady and
I were shaking in our
boots.
The instructor was
wonderful and gave us
great confidence and it
was wonderful to use the
time -saving equipment
that actually took . the
work out of the job.
We advanced gradually
thru the many steps
leading up to my putting
the ends and sides of the
frame together.
You wouldn't believe
how easy it is to not have
a sharp and true angle
cut. I managed to spoil a
couple of pieces — but I
certainly learned a lot
about woodworking.
That was the year Edna
Overholt started a new
corner shelf. I think I was
more interested in
seeing it advance than I
was with my own project
— I believe everyone
watched Edna with great
interest — just seeing the
.J ea.utifui edg.ess_ tbe._
carved shapes had
everyone eagerly
awaiting the finish. Of
course it turned into a
beautiful piece of fur-
niture and I know Edna
was proud of it.
Well, to pull this tale in
— the instructor ends by
saying, "Well, Martha,
now you know why
frames are so ex-
pensive".
I never' did get to use
the small hand tools that I
had hoped would happen,
but the whole session was
a real education and if I
could, I would take the
class again — but not for
framing --- I'll let the
experts take care of that
project.
I see that Jim Mtilhern
has made the big step in
the Insurance business'
and luckily is going to be
in town. Malcolm
Mathers will be his
associate and Mr.
Mathers has had a
wonderful reputation in
this town for many, many
years. Jim is also a hard
worker with a good
_reputation so _Goderich
will have a happy team at
46 West Street. Good luck
fellows.
I. hope you managed to
take the Energy Alter-
natives Tour last
Saturday. If you didn't, I
don't know if another day
