THE FOLK IN.
THE TOWN OF
Goderich, I've found is
the most friendly place,
With a "Welcome" smile
on every face
Folk show you around,
Say Hi! Glad you're here
They've hearts of gold it
would appear
They invite you in and
make it clear, -
They're pleased you
came,
Glad to have you near
As a stranger from a
distant land,
I've discovered,
Goderich,,
And think it's grand
Someday I hope we will
meet again
If not, then down in
Memory's Lane
I'll wander round the
Square and greet,
The friendliest people
I could ever meet
The folk in the Town of
Goderich
Hi! there, thanks a
million, folk,
For a laugh, a chat, many
a joke,
Happy I met you, I'll
leave with a tear,
God Bless and keep you
for many a year.

Perversion
Dear Editor,
I have read some of the
immodest, rotten and
corruptingcontents of the
books the Huron County
School Board' have
dismissed from the high
school assortment of
English literature.
Common sense tells us
how unnecessary such
lewd expressions are
ever out of order. There's
always a recoil and
rebuttal on this score
from decent -minded folk.
What do you think the
Master teacher, the Lord
Jesus would say con-
cerning such writings in
question? It would be one
of rebuke and correction.
God hates all manner of
sin but loves pure words.
The Bible condemns
such behaviour as ex-
pressed in both "The
Diviners" and "Of Mice
and Men". Fallen human
nature prompted by the
devil and self doesn't
need to be taught such
degrading stuff as there's
enough examples all

The figures certainly
indicate that the whole
plan is just another
typical government "cart
before the horse", money
wasting program serving
no real worthwhile
purpose.
Meanwhile the tax-
payer might well keep a
doefful eye on that 39
percent increase of debt
cases since these non-
profit agencies could
hardly be expected to
accept increased work
loads without an equal
increase of taxpayers'
dollars.
The whole crazy circle
seems to be ever ex-
panding. The "over-
s spenders" are growing,'
numbers. tile" govern-
ment, who seems to have
overlooked the fact that
the horse has escaped
long ago or that the barn
even had a door which
could have been closed, is
now blissfully engaged in
trying to plug the open
doorway with taxpayers'
dollars via the credit and
debt counselling agen-
cies. ..
If by way of example,
the medical authorities
were confronted with an
epidemic of somewhat
equal proportions, they
would likely institute
some form of quarantine,
even by ' legislation if
necessary.
It follows then, that a
simple piece of
legislation would be r the
solution to slow down
these "overspenders"
who, apparently are not
able to control their
money spending desires
leading to financial self-
destruction and, un-
fortunately become
another burden for the
taxpayer•to.carry.
Nobody likes the ad-
dition of new laws, but, it
seems some are
necessary from 'time to
time. We have seat belt
laws, speed laws, drug
laws and so on. The basic
idea being to prevent self
destruction and
sometimes the
destruction of others.
So why not a law to
prevent financial self-
destruction? Like having
to pay, say 25 percent
down 'payment on any
financial purchase other
than housing.
This way the "over -
spenders" would have to
save some of their money
in order to purchase the
items they so desire.
To some the saving
habit may even become
now -pay later plans) can
now trot up to a nearby
agency, at the expense of
the taxpayer of course, to
the tune of well over a
million dollars this year,
to be told or counselled
that 2 + 2 does not add up
to 5 despite the glib
claims of the loan artists
and the buy now - pay
later proponents.
The news item went on
to say that the agencies
handled 12,700 cases
What problem? during the fiscal year of
1977-78 and that there
were 7,400 new cases
opened. The total debt of
the' new cases alone
amounted to more than 59
million dollars.
It seems the govern-
ment people freely give
out statistics like the
number of debt plagued
citizens who managed to
find their way • to the
counselling agencies to
lay their troubles at the
feet of the
knowledgeable. The
government, however,
fails to reveal just how
many debt burdened
"overspenders" were
actually saved from the
agonizing horrors of
bankruptcy by this
somewhat costly network
of advisors.
Looking at the figures
again, it would appear
that the agencies came
into the fiscal year with a
back -log of 5,300
unresolved cases of
people seriously in debt
and to this figure they
will have to add the 7,400
new cases they just
picked up. That looks like
a 39 percent increase.
A situation like this
could almost direct the
question towards these
counselling agencies,
such as, are they really
the "wonder drug" that
can cure the financially
stricken?
The answer would
more likely be that they
are merely a mild but
expensive "pain killer"
that, in fact the patient
finally succumbs to his
financial sickness in the
long run.
A more recent news
item of August 31, 1978
would almost bear out
this conjecture, since it
revealed that so far in
1978 there has been 12,557
bankruptcies across
Canada. No figureswere
given for Ontario alone.
Dear Editor:
Re: Square becoming

This article to me is a
complete .figment of the
imagination.
We in Goderich are
relatively clear of what
most people would call
vandalism when we take
into account such places
as Waterloo, Welland
and Port Colborne; we
can be thankful that our
police 'department has
made this possible by
gaining the respect of the
Majority of teenagers
and in return respecting
them.
With regards to a
statement made by our
mayor in the local paper,
I have only one comment
to make and that is
people who live in glass
houses should not throw
stones.
In some cases adults
seem to forget that they
are looked upon by
teenagers ' to set an
example by respecting
the laws and the people
we elect to enforce them.

Dear Editor:
A recent news item
revealed that the Ontario
Community and Social
Services Ministry will
provide more than
$680,000 of taxpayers'
money to fund 29 credit
and debt agencies
throughout Jthe province
this year.
The grant represents 60
percent of the operating
costs of the agencies, •the
other 40 percent comes
from local municipal
taxation in the com-

agencies are located.

Dear Editor,
In regards to the
replacement of the Huron
Tract plaque on Huron
Road with a bilingual
plaque, it is my un-
derstanding that the
present sign must go, and
that the new bilingual one
can be placed anywhere
in 'Huron County. If an

it be placed exactly in the

It would perhaps be
better to select a new

the dumping of bilingual

election promises, etc.
This new dump site
should not be open to the

will need all the available
