The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-09-07, Page 5Good work Dear Editor, I would like to just pay tribute to the efforts of Sam James for his summer program regarding the swimming team and rallies. It seems to me, he is to be heartily commended for the arranging of starters, timers, scorers, announcers, the arrangement of the grounds, the at- tractiveness of the set- ting, food, -transportation, trophies and prizes. It's a big job and he's done it _very very. wgLLs . eatinga m. for both the participants and the spectators. Congratulations Sam. . • Sincerely, Richard P. Robarts. Thank you Dear Editor, The members of the Bluewater Kennel Club would like to thank Joanne Walters for the excellent coverage af- forded our Sanction Match which was recently held at Bluewater Centre. The show was indeed a c. great success and we 'hope to. be able to con- sider such an un- dertaking at the Centre again next year. Yoursins e s rel Y _.-F E: Emerson, Match Secretary Who pays? along Lake Huron, would like people to hear our side. Our particular lot is deeded as .100.3 wide. by 244.66 deep. If we do not count the beach as ours we have 100.3 wide by 200.6 deep, therefore we are losing 44 feet. People like the writer of that letter really burn us up. They walk through our back yards with their children, boxes of beer, picnic baskets, etc. They knock down trees, set them on fire and enjoy our land. Upon leaving, they douse their fires and ,leave. ,behiuctj ;the, sand bottles and other various debris. And if it's dark enough when they leave they take along with them boats, rubber rafts, boat motors and anything else light enough to carry. A lot of us have spent a great deal of time and money building steps and pathways to the beach for the enjoyment of ' our families and neighbours. We are getting tired of having to clean up gar- bage left -behind by people who do not ap- preciate our property when we wish to use the beach. I would like to ask the writer of that letter and the Ministry of Natural Resources how much fuss they would make if we returned their visits to their backyards and left" A_ R E We don't mind people using our beach but we do not want them to trespass on our property to get there. We have to pay for our rights to the beach but do they? Yours truly, Jack Riddell, M.P.P. Huron -Middlesex Nrw IT'DR Looks better Dear Editor, The past, year has been a significant and critical one for labour in Ontario. Likely to be remembered as the year we emerged from three years of wage controls, it was also a year of continued government paralysis on the economic front. It was a year when the cost of living rose 50 percent higher than the increase in average weekly wages:. A year when private -sector in - Luring 'fell 'to I050`'s-tevels despite the recording of the' biggest industrial profits in this country's history. A year when unit labour costs dropped and 'Canadian workers were still blamed far our in- dustry's lack of in- ternational . com- petitiveness. The - year ahead • looks little better. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development predicts economic growth will fall well short of government estimates. The Conference Board warns that unem- ployment will top the nine percent mark. Workers in ,this province and this country have suffered enough. They have paid their fair share. Labour legitimately expects some visible return on its investment, in our economy. It expects to be able to maintain a decent standard of living. It expects a commitment from all levels of government to full em- ployment and swift steps taken to reach this at- -- •ina ile : -1• expg action- 'on ` a profl ise of strong occupational health -and safety legislation. And it expects a revision ofour labour codes to more accurately reflect the trade union movement's place in the mainstream of the Canadian community. The next, year will not be - an easy one for - Ontario and Canada. Organized labour is prepared to • ,act in a responsible ad positive manner if it is assured of action by business and bf ehind the same kind o mess. Another question for them is if there was a Dear Editor, flood, the high water Inmarkt would come up, reference to the letter: "Losing Beach" does that mean that our homes, cottages or dated August 17, 1978: We, the home and whatever would become cottage owners living public property? I hardly think so. Dear, Readers.... • from page 4 how valuable the book could be as a teaching aid in the classroom. She supported The Diviners. There's • Dorothy Wallace, a well respected woman in Goderich, whose late husband Dr. John Wallace knew about life and the people who lived it .... and lovbd everyone. Mrs. Wallace 'supported The Diviners. There's Herb Turkheim, . a former newspaper editor and publisher, who has learned through the years that hiding' the truth is never wise. Shielding and protecting the public's right to freedom of in- formation is the, pnly way to ensure understanding and wisdom. He sul5- ported the book. Huron County hasn't heard the last of the groupof conceined parents. The members will be back. And when they grow tired of the struggle ..:` or when they are too old to fight .... others will_ take their place. For there will always be people who -will want to stifle freedom and put men and women in neat little packages all in a row. Haverkamp said that "man often forgets that the beginning of all wisdom is fear of the Lord". Amen. But that goes a long way back, to the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve were in a safe sinless world with one simple instruction: Do not eat of that tree. And everyone knows that Adam and Eve 'disregarded the Lord's command when they were tempted by Satan. They ate of the fruit and right away., the Bible explains, they saw their nakedness and ran and hid. People haven't changed much today. A few people said The Diviners, Of Mice and Men and Catcher in the Rye were -forbidden fruit. And right away, the book stores are sold out of those copies, the library has a waiting list for the books and people who have read the publications before are re -reading them with an eye for blasphemy. And they'll see their naked- ness. Yes, I'm a prude. A product of my life to date. But I will fight for the right of . people everywhere to grow to their full height in freedom. Book banning isn't freedom. The right to choose is. As far as I'm concerned, the Huron County Board of Education at the in- sistence of the group of concerned citizens has removed that right -to choose from the senior students of Huron County high schools.
