The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-08-31, Page 21Found `rt Old timers of Goderich will fondly remember the Wong's Cafe', established by Gordon Wong in 1926 at the corner of Montreal St. and The Square. I am told this Cafe was most unusual for a small town since the, good meals, good service and the great cleanliness of the establishment - besides its beautiful Chinese decor -made a name for itself throughout Southwestern Ontario. The staff were all chinese-smiling-eager to please and working from early morn to the wee hours of theanite. The spotless kitchen had a great old fashioned stove on which they did all their • cooking and baking. A great many people in Goderich have been surprised by a gift of "fancy pastries which they would wrap every time they had extras and take to them. When did you ever receive such a gift from a restaurant? At that time a relative, Fred Wong, was in charge of the dining room at the old British Exchange Hotel. (Woolworths now occupy that site). Every Chinese New Year -which happens in February -either Gordon or Fred would hold the celebration and all the chinese ih town - yes, there. were laun- dries, too -and their special friends enjoyed a great feast and en- tertainment. People from near and far always came back to "Wongs." The Chinese never forget a friend -or even a customer of just a few times -and once a friend -always a friend - and you were very 'for- tunate- If .they . were real busy or shorthanded you were even allowed to help yourself -How about THAT? There was just hap- piness -never any trouble in this cafe arid -that has -to -'be " a... 'placeto remember. ' Gordon sold out to George Baechler iri 1947 -and in '48 made a trip home to Canton, China, returning in 1950 to Canada with his wife and son. Gordon died in 1961, his. wife, Kow Shem died this year on Aug. 11, in Ottawa, surviving by son Ken of Hull, Quebec, and a daughter living in China. She is also sur- vived by 10 grandchildren and one great- granddaughter. I'm sure people of London, Ontario and Goderich will remember - fondly -The ' Wangs-.and the end of a wonderful era. • Today I found the origin of the title "Boxing Day". I always believed it had to be a sports day after Christmas, but here is the story: In England - or the "Olde Country" boys apprenticed to a LARGEST STOCK IN THE COUNTY WORK.__ BOOTS,. —Industrial —Farm —Factory Plain or safety toe PUNCTURE PROOF SOLES ROSS SHOE SHOP 142 The Square Goderich, Ont. 9 Abou4 • trade for seven years. They lived with their bosses and received little or no pay. The day after Christmas..,,,,they were allowed to go around and visit their customers and expect a "Christmas box" or gift for having served them faithfully all year. Later this privilege was 1 taken over by the post- man, the lamplighter, the milkman (and the paper boy!) So that is why we have "Boxing Day". Have your gifts ready - I recall his paper money -but he still came `around "Boxing Day." Since school is about to start, this item in the 1945 issue of the Signal -Star took my eye. It concerns the teachers and the, parents of the youngsters in school. It goes: In this day and age, good manners are considered "sissyfied" by ,theyoung pupil and teachers could help in counteracting this ten- dency. ople particular With the arrival of little Michelle Armstrong on August 8 of this year, five generations were complete in this family. The need for discipline and teaching of self- control was stressed -and it should be taught in the home. Also the teaching of religion in schools where no minister was available (apparently in and out of the way places with no churches- This doesn't apply now.) The'school should be a place of happiness and pupils should be taught to remember their debt to the Motherland -often forgotten. From kindergarten they should have learned - at home -how to dress and be responsible for their belongings. They should be to school on time and regular attendance is under the control of the Martha Rathburn ap- pears weekly in The Signal -Star parent. Enough sleep and a good breadfast will help them concentrate and not need so much urging from their teacher. How much of this has changed since 1945? Of course they have not only their radios now but the television -and I'll bet it is the same old cry -"I work better with the radio on!" A lady from Clinton called me regarding tours of homes -and there is not one in the near future that I know about but I wonder if the tour of the Energy Alternatives - set up by the Energy "FARM FRESH" FRUIT Available Now At...
