The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-08-24, Page 5To the point
Dear Editor:
Mrs. Haydon's letter re
the lawn watering is very
much to the point. I have
lost several tree
arguments with Mrs.
Haydon but I respect
what she is trying to do
and I vote with her on this
item. I believe most
people find this to be a
very irritating regulation
and question the
necessity for same.
As I am not familiar
with the limitations of the
facilities; and jf
restrictions are
necessary, so be it, I will
leave this to the
judgement of the experts
-Ciffier-ff.
DEAR EDITOR
someone was giving- the
matter some attention.
There would un-
doubtedly be some
abuses at first, but most
people are reasonable
and once the novelty of
the forbidden fruit has
worn off, I would think
this would balance itself
out.
I have been bothered
ever since one of our
former . Commissioners
told me that present
Sunday hours of 8 a.m. to
11 a.m. were purposely
set that early because
they knew most people
did not get up that early
on Sundays. I apparently
was under the mistaken
impression that the
P.U.C. was set up to
serve the needs of the
arrangement.
It is well known that
people will not honor a
bad law. I am not in a
position to say whether
this is a bad one or not,
but certainly it is not
popular and as a con-
sequence many people
simply disregard it,
apparently without
penalty. A change in
method might improve
the public relations
aspect of it and people
would be much more
inclined to go along with
it.
I am— not entirely
familiar with the corn-
plete system, but one city
in our part of the province
allows houses with even
A change in timing
would not be the end of
the world and is not
irrevocable.

City idea
Dear Editor:
My husband and I were
born and raised in the
city. We moved to
Goderich with our small
children four years ago.
While we find most
aspects of "small town
life" very pleasant, there
are some areas that leave
a lot to be desired. The
one which bothers me the
most is that of medical
care.
numbers to water from 7 I realize that most of
a.m. to 10 p.m. on days of the doctors in town are
the month with an even
number and the same
hours on alternate or
uneven dates for houses
with uneven numbers.
This not only gives a
variation on watering
days, but in my opinion
would probably spread
the use of water over a
longer period of time and
theoretically at least
should not increase the
load on the waterworks.
I presume we are' only
•at a peak usage period
under our present system
for three or four weeks
during the growing
season and then interest
in watering tends to fall
off. There could be
variations' on these times
to suit local needs or
conditions and a change
would at least show •
grossly overworked, but
if they tried to work out a
system along the lines of
some city doctors, their
load might be eased.
To begin with, they had
an answering service so
that when you called your
doctor's office number
you always got an an-
swer. These people were
trained to weed out the
emergencies from the
cases that could wait
until tomorrow.
They always had a
phone number where the
doctor could be reached.
This diverted a lot of
unnecessary calls from
the doctor's home while
giving the patients the
security of knowing they
could reach a doctor 24
hours a day.
The doctors also for -
med groups. Our group
had six doctors in it. They
each had their own office
in different parts of town,
but they each took one
week of being on call 'for
the group.
This meant that they
had one very hectic week
of taking calls for the
group, followed by five
weeks of nothing but the
occasional O.B. outside of
office hours.
The pharmacies also
formed groups. Each
took a turn being open for
a few lours on a Sunday.
and being on 24 hour call
to the doctors.
I would often go on
Sunday to talk to the
pharmacist and he would
either give me something
to tide me over to the
doctor's office hours, or
suggest that the problem
couldn't wait and would
sometimes phone, the
doctor himself while I
waited.
The doctors • could
phone for a prescription
24 hours a day. This
would take -some of the
pressure off our hospital
emergency ward that
now performs this ser-
vice.
The hospitals also kept
the name and number of
a dentist "on call" at all
times.
Perhaps some of these
ideas are too expensive or
too impractical for small
town use, but surely some
research could be done to
find a new system that
would be more attractive
to doctors and patients
alike!
Sincerely,
Dona Baker.
Thanks
Dear Editor,
I would personally like
to congratulate Deputy -
reeve Eileen Palmer and
Councillors'Stan Profit
and Don Wheeler for
opposing • the Square
beautification project.
While opposing this
project generally and in
particular the ex-
penditure of $110,000 of
the taxpayers' money, in
my opinion they showed
they have the working-
class taxpayers' interests
at heart. -
For that, I thank them
for using some fiscal
common sense and trying
to adhere to this so called
"Meat and potatoes"
budget we read about
earlier in the year.
I am also appalled that
the BIA of Goderich and
the other members of
council would allow -
themselves to get in-
volved in a "keeping up
with the Joneses- com-
petition with other small
towns in this province.
I therefore, hope that
those members who
voted yea on this matter
can join me as a spec-
tator and interested
citizen at the council
meetings after the
elections this fall.
An irate taxpayer

Jesus here
Dear Editor:
To Mr. Barney, maybe,
the clergy are favored'
when it comes to religious
things, for_that was made
by man, not by God. The
Bible is not a religious
book and never was. It is
pure Christianity and
truth, God's word writ-
ten.
The real name for the
Bible is "The Book of the
Science of Economic
Law". Book of all laws.
. I don't think many of
the clergy realize or know
that Jesus Christ, The
King of Kings, has
already taken over and
come to this earth to start
that long -promised great
Kingdom of His. Just as
the Bible said, He would
as a thief in fhe night.
