By Wilma Oke
Six secondary school
and university students
are spending their
summer at Dublin con-
ducting a summer school
for children who are in
special education classes
in the Huron -Perth
County Roman Catholic
Separate School system:
Another six are at the
school board office in
Dublin preparing
materials for special
education teachers and
for the resource centre
being set up there.
Barbara Lillow of
Bluevale has been hired
as a co-ordinator in
charge of the 12 students -.
all paid for by an
Experience '78 grant
through the ministry of
education.
School board
superintendent Joseph
Mills requested the grant
and continues to
supervise the activities.
The summer school has
12-4 students registered,
the first three weeks were
for students from Perth
County and these last
.three weeks for Huron
students. The final two
weeks are for making an
evaluation of the
program and doing
reports. •,
Four teachers are
working with the students
as well, paid for by a
summer school grant
from the ministry of
education which pays all
the costs for the children
attending the school, such
as busing,.
Mr. Mills said the
summer school covers
four areas of con-
centration for the
primary, junior and
intermediate students.
First, an academic
language and art ap-
proach and
mathematics; second,
socialization by group
interaction, plays and
games; third, physical
-educati on- -throu-gh-rn
development and fourth,
arts and crafts.
Mr. Mills stated the --
prime function is to get to
know the children better
and to provide a con -
tinuity in their learning
experience.
The six,. students
working in the new
resource centre being set
up in ithe board office to
be opened in September,
are preparing materials
and building up a backlog
that other teachers can
use.
Mr. Mills is responsible
for the centre and for the
material being prepared
by the students. They are
laminating l making
games and activity
cards, flash cards, slides
and tapes, lettering kits,
and many other
materials for the
educational resource
centre.
The resource centre
will be open certain
evenings during the
school term for teachers
to come to prepare
materials or to get
materials. They will be
-br
there is a reviewer to look
at their work. The
teachers- may even bring
students in and do theatre
for television on the small
video unit,Mr. Mills said.
Rabies on the decline
Reported cases of
rabies in Huron County
has declined sharply
since last winter, Dr. W.
Thompson district
veterinarian said Mon-
day.
Late last winter there
was increase in the
number of rabies cases
reported but since then
there have been very few
reports, he said.
- Thompson -said- skunks -
and foxes are the -major
spreaders of the disease.
If someone suspects a
rabid animal has con-
tacted a person or farm
animal they should
contact the Health of
Aniinals Branch in
Seaforth, he said.
"We are only interested
in specimens with which
other animals are in-
volved. It costs a lot of
money to process
specimens. If someone
comes across a dead
animal they 'suspect has
rabies, but hasn't con-
tacted anything else the -
best thing they- can do is
bury it," Thompson said.
Another disease which
has` •plagued Huron
County in the past,
Brucellosis is also on the
decline the' district
veterinarian said.
The disease, known as
undulant fever in man,
causes abortions in
cattle. If a farmer has a
positive case on his farm,
his livestock is
quarantined and all the
animals are tested. If the
disease can't be
eradicated, the entire
herd may -have to- be -----
slaughtered. 9
"We are down to .only
eight infected herds from
a high of one time of 23. "
