Round `n'About
In the last few years -
I'm repeating parts of
Editor Keller's write-up
to Dear Readers of last
week -- the mentally
handicapped youngsters
and oldsters in Goderich
and area are developing
some new interests.
Besides the regular
swimming and bowling,
programs of weaving and
dancing, hockey and golf
- and driving cars, extra
school classes, and
municipal recreation
programs even hunting,
and gun safety, have been
providing a lifetime of
living experiences for
Martha Rathburn ap-
pears weekly in The
Signal -Star
...with Martha
"never give up - try
again" attitude where the
less fortunate of our'
society are concerned.
I probably would not
have re -read the article
had it not been for the
first few paragraphs
seemingly stressing that
Betty had given so much
of herself mainly because
of her "special child"
Linda.
Her love for Linda and
others like her, may have
created a beginning for
Betty's passion but it was
definitely not her only
reason - as implied - as
many who know her will
verify.
I'm sure our editor did
not mean to create this
impression but to
newcomers
and others

programs and a better
way of life for the men-
tally slow or handicapped
would perhaps feel this
was her only interest
It takes many, many
years working with these
people, young and old,
whether physically or
mentally handicapped to
begin to see the results
which have shown up in
the last few years.
Now that the funding
for this program is in
doubt, Betty and her
many friends are very
concerned and feel surely
something - can be
worked out among the
municipalities for
something that touches
not only the mentally
handicapped but society
as a whole.
We can only hope
everyone will support this
program now that it is
rolling so well and the
Powers That Be can route
out things less important
and integrate this as part
f the municipalities'
udgets. Let us pray!

For the last two years,

Bruce Johnston of Goderich and his young handler George Melanson were
happy prize winners at the Barrie Dog Show .held at Molson's Park last
