On August 16, 1978 I will be 11 years old. Here ls, my picture for the paper. I live at 246 Hincks St. in Goderich. It would be great to win your prize of the month. Yours truly David Armstrong Every Saturday morning since March the Ben - miller Girls' Group ` has been conducting a newspaper drive in Colborne Township. The money they raise goes through the Christian Children's Fund to help,a boy in the Philippines who they call Paper drives and carnivals their "little brother". Money which they collect from a weekly newspaper and bottle drive goes through the Christian Children's Fund to help him buy clothing and further his education. Area kids labour in love By Joanne Walters Every penny... counts! This has become evident in Goderich and area recently people - raise money through various projects to help others less fortunate than them°selves. Through their labours of love they learn the true meaning of the adage, "It's better to give than receive." They •feel good about them- selves and what they are doing. And well they should! ".LITTLE.EROTHER There are about 16 to 20 members in the Ben - miller Girls' Group and since March 11' 'these members have been holding weekly paper drives in Colborne Township. Every Saturday morning they gather at Benmiller United Church, organize their routes and with assistance from their pa -rents and—leaders—Lois-- Rowe and I3oro.thy Fisher who do the driving, they pick up bundles of newspapers and collect bottles they find along side the roads too. Back at the church Betty Huff fishes for prizes at Ewen McMahon's backyard Carnival Against Dystrophy which was held on Monday to raise money for musuclar dystrophy research. The fish pond was just one of several events held at the carnival which raised about $15. Jamey Sturdy of Goderich also held a Carnival Against Dystrophy this year. It was his second. (Photo by Joanne Walters) about noon, they sort an tie up the papers securel to be hauled away fo recycling . and used a insulation. The mone they. ....-r-ecei-ve-.--for - ..thei• work is sent .through th Christian Children' Fund to their "adopte little brother" in th Philippines. A mere $10 sent to thi little boy as a Christmas gift allowed him to purchase a pair of shoes a shirt and pants. Money sent also helps him to further his education which would be • im- possible otherwise. The girls take turns writing to their "little brother' once a month and he returns their correspondence calling each one "auntie". The girls have had three or four "adopted" children, over the years from such places as Vietnam and Korea. They find that their paper drive is a good money- maker for support of their children. They have received fine community co-operation in Colborne Township and are also willing to pick up papers from other areas as well if they are contacted (524- '6235 or 524-7627), _...... -HELP-FIGHT . . Twelve -year-old Ewen McMahon and five helpers held a backyard Carnival Against Dystrophy on Monday and raised about $15 to be sent to aid in the funds for the vital research and patient service program of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Balloons and streamers decorated Ewen's yard and house and his mother, Myra served home-made refreshments on the "porch." Ewen got the idea for the carniTal from a form he picked up . at a McDonald's restaurant he was at in London. He sent away for a kit which explained how to set up such a carnival. He may hold another one next year too. - Jamey, Sturdy • of Goderich held his second Carnival Against Dystrophy this year.,With Jamey as ringmaster and Lisa Baechier, , Nancy Little, Tim -Connelly and - Stephen Sturdy as. helpers $40 was raised for ,the MD fund.
