Ref halts Goderich bantam soccer
The Goderich Culligan
Soccer team travelled to
St: Clair Shores,
Michigan on Saturday,
July 29th, 1978 for a
league game.
The game was blown
off by the referee about 15
minutes into the second
half. At that point it was a
2-2 tie. The Goderich
players just had their
combination going when
the game was stopped.
Mark Webb and George
Kerr were the
piaymakers. for Goderich
with the forwards Mike
Wedlock, Mike Hodges
and Randy Stoddart
capitalizing on these
fantastic players.
One of the Goderich
players got a red card for
using his buttocks to
yvard off the opponents.
He was warned twice.and
got the red card on the
third occasion. The
Goderich coach figured
that was fair, but he
opposed another player
getting a red card for
asking the referee to look
out for the elbows being
used by the opponents. It
was at this point that the.
referee stopped the game
saying the Goderich teani
lost the game. The
Goderich coach told the
referee he cannot award
the game to anyone, it is
up to the League to decide
at a disciplinary hearing.
Thp coach states there
wts no rowdyism on the
field which would allow
the referee to stop the
game. The coach has
been in contact with the
league officials in Sarnia.
On Saturday, August 5,
1978 the Goderich Ban-
tams won their game'

from Sarnia. The score
''`Was 5-1 for Goderich.
Goal scorers for Goderich
were Randy Stoddart,
three, Mike Hodges, one
and Mike Wedlock, one.
Gilbert Vanden Hue''el
„made some good plays at
defense. He covered`
every angle of the op-
ponents and at times
covered both sides of the
back field. Marty Middel
was shifted by the coach
to a different position and
he played a solid game.
Kent Sholtz played a very
good game and missed
three chances of scoring
but the coach told him to
keep trying, the goals
would come. Credit
should be given to the
aflie
Sarnia team who were
short of playersbut they
played an excellent clean
game.
Again the coach . em-
phasized that soccer is a
team sport and all his
players , played a very
good game. The Goderich
team is still the number
one team in the Sarnia -St.
Clair Shores league and
the coach would like to
keep it that way. The
coach wishes to thank all
the parents that assist
him in transportation and
the spectators that come
out for their home games.
The team travels to
Sarnia on Saturday
August 12 for their next
game.
