Joe's Girls 3—Clinton Housewives 27 Ref halts Goderich bantam soccer The Goderich Culligan Soccer team travelled to St: Clair Shores, Michigan on Saturday, July 29th, 1978 for a league game. The game was blown off by the referee about 15 minutes into the second half. At that point it was a 2-2 tie. The Goderich players just had their combination going when the game was stopped. Mark Webb and George Kerr were the piaymakers. for Goderich with the forwards Mike Wedlock, Mike Hodges and Randy Stoddart capitalizing on these fantastic players. One of the Goderich players got a red card for using his buttocks to yvard off the opponents. He was warned twice.and got the red card on the third occasion. The Goderich coach figured that was fair, but he opposed another player getting a red card for asking the referee to look out for the elbows being used by the opponents. It was at this point that the. referee stopped the game saying the Goderich teani lost the game. The Goderich coach told the referee he cannot award the game to anyone, it is up to the League to decide at a disciplinary hearing. Thp coach states there wts no rowdyism on the field which would allow the referee to stop the game. The coach has been in contact with the league officials in Sarnia. On Saturday, August 5, 1978 the Goderich Ban- tams won their game' here in Goderich against the Canadian Legion Pontiacs tie for division lead McGee Pontiacs jumped back into a tied for first place in the Maitland Division of the Industrial League with two league victories. The -Pontiacsdumped Green and Parent 9-2` in a game played Wednesday to make up for a rainout and thumped Little Bowl 15-3 in a scheduled game Monday. The wins leave McGees and Fiscer with identical, 12-7, won -lost records and 24 points on the season. McGees defeated Green and Parent 9-2 on the strength of a five -run, rally in the third inning of five hits, including , a double by Ken- Meriam. The Pontiacs scored single runs in the first and sixth, innings, two in the fifth and five in the third. Ken Vanderburgh and Harry Kerr led the Pontiacs at the plate with two hits each. Van- derburgh hit a sole homer to lead off . the Pontiac first inning and also doubled in the fifth. He scored runs. Kerr had two singles in three at bats and scored a run. . _.McG.ees...tag.g.e.d_los.ing,. pitcher Jim Martin for nine hits in the game while winning pitcher, Rick Sowerby, stopped the Thunderbirds on five hits and struck out seven batters. • The Thunderbirds scored their first run in -the second inning on a single by Len Kolkman and a triple by Pete Frayne. Jim Harrison scored the final run in the. sixth inning. McGees nailed down a share of first place rip- ping Little Bowl for 15 runs on 14 hits in a 15-3 win Monday. a The Pontiacs trailed 2-0 after two innings_-of•play before they put the bats to two Little Bowl pitchers for 15 runs across the final five innings. 'Paul Kelly led the Pontiac offence with three hits in four trips to the plate. Spitzig's two hits were homers as he nailed a sole shot in the third inning 'and added`'a two_. run homer in his next at bat. Tykes eliminated in two games The Goderich Tykes were eliminated from W,OAA tyke playoff ac- tion on the weekend as they dropped a best -of - three preliminary round, series to Walkerton in two straight games. Walkerton won the opening game of the series 12 - 8 in Walkerton and then wrapped up The best -of -three affairs with a 20 - 16 win in Goderich, Saturday. In both games of the series, a big run - producing inning by ,.Walkerton ._ wasthe. downfall for the Victoria and Grey Tykes. Walkerton - took an early lead in the first ...ga.me_ w.ith...four__r_uns...An. the first inning on four straight hits. They added five more in the third inning 'and the tykes found themselves trailing 11 - 1 after five innings of play. Goderich began to move Jhe offence in the sixth inning and scored four runs on triples by David Almasi and Matt Buchanan. They added three more runs in their final at bat but the rally fell four runs short. • Almasi led -Goderich batters with two hits in four trips to the plate, a double and a triple. Goderich had Walkerton on the ropes in the second game and it appeared they would force a third game in the series but7'Walkerton rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to win 20 - 16. Goderich held a 10 - 5 lead in the game after three innings of play, as they exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third inning. But Walkerton chipped away at the lead scoring three runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before they put the game away -- with the six -run rally in their final at bat. Goderich trailed 20 - 13 heading into the .bottom of the seventh inning and scored three runs before Walkerton retired the side. Buchanan and Joey,, Fitzpatrick led the Goderich attack with three hits apiece. John Hoy hit a solo homer in the second inning and LeBrun added a three -run blast in the third to let to their 12thIn ;of the season aga4st :seven losses. Fisher andMcGee Pontiacs are tied for the Maitland Division lead with identical records and both teams have three games remaining in the regular schedule. Fisher fell behind as Green and Parent scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a three -run homer by Jim Martin. Fisher got tjose three runs back in the second inning as Hoy ho'mered anzt Jaeir McKinnon and Jim Durst scored. Fisher turned the game around in the third inning scoring four runs on the strength of LeBrun's three -run shot. Jim Bell, Hoy, Gerry Durst and LeBrun scored the third inni gttui s. Goal scorers for Goderich were Randy Stoddart, three, Mike Hodges, one and Mike Wedlock, one. Gilbert Vanden Hue''el „made some good plays at defense. He covered` every angle of the op- ponents and at times covered both sides of the back field. Marty Middel was shifted by the coach to a different position and he played a solid game. Kent Sholtz played a very good game and missed three chances of scoring but the coach told him to keep trying, the goals would come. Credit should be given to the aflie Sarnia team who were short of playersbut they played an excellent clean game. Again the coach . em- phasized that soccer is a team sport and all his players , played a very good game. The Goderich team is still the number one team in the Sarnia -St. Clair Shores league and the coach would like to keep it that way. The coach wishes to thank all the parents that assist him in transportation and the spectators that come out for their home games.
