ots C.© Poor service Dear Editor, I am writing this letter hoping you or someone might offer an ex- planation for the poor bus service in Goderich. I was hofne from Toronto this past weekend and on Sunday morning at 10:30 called the Goderich Taxi Stand to find out what time the bus would leave that evening to return to Toronto. In calling the taxi stand I made my first error. I was told by its owner that it was not the bus depot -an.d. that la . get pay required information I must call another number. Yet, after calling the stated depot number there was no answer. I may be wrong here editor, but I have always thought the bus depot and the taxi stand were both run by the same people. After calling back to the taxi stand, Mr. Betties promptly in- formed me that he could not tell me what time the bus left, that the bus and the taxi stand were two separate companies, and finally that if I wanted to know what time my bus left, I should consult a timetable on the 'taxi stand's door. I realize Mr: `Kettle's - interests in keeping businessof the two companies separate, but if he is to have charge of •both companies I suggest he run them more ef- ficiently. • Why was there no one to. answer ,my .._inquiry __at ... the "bus depot" at 10:30 on a Sunday morning? True,- I should have found out my departure time before -the very day I was to leave, and it was a mistake on my part to also assume I could easily find out such a simple thing as bus times. In fact,- you might. say I am quite lazy, since I for one, do not feel like walking down to West Street to find out what time the bus leaves, when I know well Mr. Betties might have broken his policy to tell, me the departure time. It is infuriating to the point of hilarity that the one mode of public transportation in and out of . Goderich ',cannot be depended • on. I would appreciate an ex- planation for my troubles -this-past Su-ndayy: _.....-..._._... _.. Disappointed, Brenda L. Thompson Toronto, DEAR EDITOR Editor's Note: A quick call Tuesday afternoon to the local., agent for Charterways Tran- sportation Ltd. at 524- 2092, Bruce Betties, reveals information about bus departure and arrival times is given out Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p,m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bus depot telephone is not staffed on Sundays. Bruce Betties advises that while the bus depot telephone happens to be in the same building as the taxi company, the bus depot is not open in the evenings and on Sundays, and information- 'about -bus times will not be dispensed by taxi com- pany staff. Listed in the Goderich telephone directory, also under Charterways Transportation Ltd., is a number for the Clinton agent. For years and years, the bus depot in Clinton has been Bar- tliff's bakery. . A call also on Tuesday afternoon to Doug Bar- tliff in Clinton revealed that Goderich people often call the Clinton office for bus times. "It is every day pf the week, not just Sundays'," said Bartliff. "The Goderich bus depot people even refer callers _people us, when they think they are too- -busy to handle the calls. It is most annoying for us. We would like to do something about ,that problem." Bartliff said his staff hates to refuse in- formation to Goderich callers, .abut feels it ,--is definitely not their responsibility to service them. He says their agreement with Char- terways is based on a commission for the ticket sales, and argues that when Goderich people get information from Clinton and then purchase tickets elsewhere, it becomes very bothersome. Tempers could get short. There's little doubt that bus depot facilities in Goderich are less than adequate, but the fault seems to rest more with the bus company than with the local agent. Goderich does not have a business that is con=' sistently willing to put up with the seven -day -a - week hassle.. with bus travellers, probably because there just aren't enough tickets sold in Goderich . to make it a financially sound ven- ture. Money can and does soothe some pain. The taxi stand does not attempt to provide a 24- hour service for bus customers. It doesn't even try to be open seven days a week. In that sense then, the taxi stand is only an interim arrangement for the bus company and provides limited convenience for bus users. it has never contracted to be anything more than that - either with the Goderich people or with the bus company. It gives out travel in- formation on;ly when it is open for business, that business to sell tickets and earn a commission. Until the bus com- panies are able to provide more attractive fee schedule for local agents - citizens in Goderich and area are going to have to go to West Street to check the posted bus times when the office is closed, or remember to telephone the bus depot during hours. At the same time, Goderich and area bus customers are urged not to call Bartliff's in Clinton for bus in- formation, but rather to write or telephone the London office (603 Clark Road, phone 453-0440) and complain about the unsatisfactory conditions in Goderich where bus service is concerned. It may very well• be though, that Goderich and -area people- will just have to continue to suffer when ,it comes to bus transportation in and out of town. We've beat this drum before, all to no avail. Incidentally, part of the problem public tran- spor..tation....servi.ces _may.. be facing as far easl Ft- tracting passenger • s concerned, may be because it just is not cheaper to travel by bus ' or by train (particularly on the weekends) when compared to driving your own car even at the new gas prices. Something to think about. • Ridiculous Dear Editor: Mr. Warr, in his display of superior erudition (Aug. 3)• has simply confirmed what I have 'in'dividu'al'ly contended, long before my association with Jehovah's Witnesses that the teaching of the "Trinity" has made it impossible for one to either know - -or-- worship the One to whom Jesus referred when he said: "The hour is coming and now is, when the true r Now is the time to buy BEEF While The Price is RIGHT Sides of Beef A.1,RED BRAND WHILE THEY LAST Cut and wrapped free to your specifications sul- Ib.19 PORK Bu -r -r woes __ 16;.1.49 51.15 NEW POTATOES We Cater To STAGS WEDDINGS ..... (John 4:23 RSV) . Dealing with my reference to Romans 10:13, Mr. Warr quotes verbatim from Cruden's Concordance, page 390: "Otherwise the word is used for Jesus Christ„for the Holy Spirit and for any one whom it was desired to address deferentially.” The "word" referred to is "Lord". Consequently, Mr. Warr would have Paul saying, in effect: "For, every one who calls upon the name of `any one desired .to. address deferentially' art the Most High over all the earth." And Joel 2:32 would have any one calling on the name of that same "any one" to be saved. How ridiculous can one get? Sincerely yours C. F: Barney Clinton Blasphemy? Dear Editor, The fancy eye-catching announcement of special print which appeared on the church page last week carries with it much falsity -and -blasphemy. I refer to the Bahaist ad: Baha u llah The Redeemer of Mankind. Such a title revea'l's much ignorance of true redemptive Biblical truth. The Bible -says, "Neither is there salvation in any otheri, for there is NONE ,OTHER name UNDER HEAVEN given among men, whereby we must be saved Por redeemed." (Acts 4:12). Only God knows what man should be, what man actually is and what marl may become. He alone knows truly and fully all. that must happen to man, if he is to attain to that redeemed state to- which God is calling him and which alone can tran- sform and glorify with a new radiance and spiritual joy all of man's earthly life. God's Christ is the redemptive pattern and power by which man's salvation is to be ac- complished. In the Christ of God the power and paralysis of sin has been decisively broken. In Him we have held up before us clearly and triumphantly God's Man; and we are bidden to fasten our eyes upon Him. He is the one life in which the Father's name has been perfectly hallowed; the Father's kingdom come; the Father's will done. He is the one life which, because of his intimate fellowship with the Father, has .I been vic- torious, spi ml lly joyful, free. But r dexnption does...no_t .l??ean -, simply. that this life is held up before us to beholdforwe are to become like Christ and this we cannot ac- complish by ourselves. To accomplish that we - need Christ. Only Christ is the Redeemer of mankind and certainly not anybody else. Only Christ can save. Man is a sinner. Jesus is Redeemer.. Rev. Leonard Warr M. Th. Spelling Dear Editor, Our present socially acceptable spelling is unteachable, mind - stunting, handicapping and deceiving.
