Craven (Pampat Studios) Dangerous Dear Editor, In regards to last week's story in the paper about no bicycles on sidewalks and the fact that the police and bylaw control officer are going to enforce them is highly unethical. Regardless of whether your child's bicycle is 10 inches or 20 inches or 25 inches, in diameter, if you live in the vicinities of Huron Road or Bayfield Road or Victoria St., it is not safe for your kids to ride on the road. I , myself, ride on the sidewalk on busy streets because I feel it is too dangerous to ride on the road as. it only takes one slip to fall in front of a car and be injured and if it's not safe for me, an adult, then it sure as heck isn't safe for my kids. You could ride on the sidewalk for an hour and encounter ten pedestrians or ride on the road and face.200 cars. If you are so con-,, cerned then a move should be made to either split the sidewalks or make "'a bicylce path in the interest of everyone's safety. A.A. WEATHiROT•• OOI ERICH 5244381 Dear Editor: Much as J hate form letters, I thinkthis is the' only way I can tap the wonderful resources of Canada's weekly newspapers for a book I'm putting together this summer for publication next spring. The book is called "Spring Tonic". It's a collection of words and pictures that celebrate ,the Canadian spring. I've got a lot of material from history, from early ex- plorers, pioneer settlers, and even from the records of our native people, and I've com- missioned some of our best known writers, from W.O. Mitchell to Margaret Atwood, to set 'down their thoughts or recollections. I've got some recipes for fid- dleheads, rhubarb, asparagus, and a few other foods that are' particularly associated with spring in this country. But I need more. I need, in fact, more of everything. More in- formation, more' tips on how to cope with spring, more memories with the" real flavor of Canada and, especially, more humor. I'd love to see what you have. EDITOR I should emphasize the "Tonic" aspects of the book. It will be published next February 2 (Groundhog Day) and its main purpose, as well as celebrating spring, is to kind of help people get ready for it. • Harry Bruce, for in- stance, has written a wonderful piece for me just about opening his cottage in Nova Sccotia, that reminds 'you of getting ready for spring; there's a nice report from Raincoast Chronicles about the oolachans coming up the Bella Coola River in April to spawn. And so on. But how do people where you live get ready for spring? What are the signs? How do you conquer the mid -winter blahs? I'm not askirig that you write anything special here. Only let me know, and send me a copy of, anything you have in your files. I'll pay $50 for each piece I use --less than that for a recipe,or a light piece of verse (please no serious poetry) --and will ive all the appropriate redits. I know how well Canada's community newspapers reflect the real Canada, and I do hope you'll let me share something -from your paper with readers everywhere. ®b Yours sincerely, • Peter Grows.ki.. Box 370, Rockwood, Ontario NOB 2K0 g c Peaceful unity Dear Editor: I am always interested in what my fellow man has to say about religion, the most interesting -and maligned subject of our time. On two occasions in the last couple of week's area papers (Signal Star, Clinton News Record) have carried an article from one sect of Christianity in which the speaker explains how he feels religion is the most divisive force on earth; that it has caused human disunity, bitter hatreds, 'prejudices. I have heard it said many times before God. It originates from God and has been given to us in strict conformity with our ability to comprehend. True religion has the poticy to change the direction of men's lives. Man is created with the potential to reflect the attributes of God. All these qualities lie hidden, within us as the fruit lies hidden within the seed and can only become evident with the help of Divine Messengers as they help us to know ourselves. Mankind is perverse. In every age when God sees fit to send His word to us we scorn that word and rise up against the Divine Bearer. Centuries later we clamourously defend that same Bearer, clamourously assett the uniqueness of the small portion of that over- flowing Grace we recognize and perhaps worst of all add much in the way of man made theory and dogma and call it religion. In another segment of this week's Signal -Star yet another write remarks, "How com forting to the Christian t know God walks wit him."
