Vintage plane gets new paint
Whittington stood back
'and admired the
gleaming new .paint job
on his. P-51 H vintage war
plane, one if two left in
the world.
"She looks good,
doesn't she?" he said
with pride. "They did a
fine job 'on it."
The plane, owned by
the Whittington Brothers
of Fort Lauderdale, is one
of only two H types
remaining in the world
and once they had the
vintage aircraft restored,
they turned to Sky
-Harbor Paint Shop
owned by Larry Lysiuk
for the paint job.
The craft was restored
by Vintage Aircraft Ltd.,
Fort Collins, Colorado
and flown to.Go.deri.ch_for_..
the finishing touches.
It took a month to
complete the paint job in
authentic British
camouflage. The paint
had to be specially or-
dered and authentic color
chips were obtained from
the Imperial. War
Museum in Britain to
authenticate the design..
The plane was finished
Friday and flown to
Oshkosh, Wisconsin for
the Experimental Air-
craft Association's an-
nual convention in Wit-
tman Field. There the
plane •buffs attend daily
w-orks,h-aps- .on-,-en-g-ine
overhaul and plane
design and watch old
flying movies.
Paint shop foreman,
John Edwards said the
staff was optimistic their
job would help the plane
earn a prize for the most
-- authentic warbird in
Oshkosh.
There were ap-
proximately 550 of the H
type Mustangs built at
the end of the war but --
only two are left.
The difference between
the Whittington plane and
the standard P-51 is that
it is a lighter version than
its predecessor. •The
wheels -are smaller and it`--`
has hollow steel
propellers. The fuselage
of ,. the plane was also
lightened up to 7,000
pounds empty weight.
The plane's Rolls
Royce engine, type V
1650-9 operates at about
2,000 horsepower, 500
horsepower • more . than
the Mustang.
The P 51 H is capable of
speeds over 400 miles per
hour and has a rate of
climb of approximately
4,000 feet per minute.
