Poetry published at 92 years
Mrs. Edith Barker of
Maitland Manor (for-
merly of 125 Anglesea
Street, Goderich) has
captured her memories
of experiences over the
•years in a book of poems
just published.
In the book, Mrs.
Barker, a former
elementary school
teacher, recalls in-
teresting and amusing
times as a member of
North Street Methodist
(later North Street
United) Church choir
over the years, as well as
her remembrance of
various facets of life in
days past. Her poems
also deal with her ob-
servation of nature;
Mrs. Barker, the for-
mer Edith Esther
Jenkins, is the widow of
the late Charles Barker,
who passed away in 1975.
The couple were married
by the Reverend Charles
Clarke of North Street
United Church on July.8,
° 1925.
After her husband's
death, Mrs. Barker was a
resident of the Nelson
Street Nursing Home,
before moving to
Maitland Manor, where
she has a host of friends
among staff and
residents alike, and
where she is regularly
visited by her nephews,
other relatives and
friends.
Although she is now 92
years of age, Mrs. Barker
delights in taking part in
all the activities of the
residence, and continues
her special love of people,
of poetry and of the and activities ill the

Prayer is the sol isolution
BY THE REVEREND
EDWARD J.
DENTINGER,
ASHFIELD CATHOLIC
CHURCH
The world today is
undergoing a great crisis.
Prayer is the only
solution to the problems.
in The famed Dr. Alex
of Carrel, who was a
skeptic, changed his
mind about prayer and
God's power to do
anything for His
creatures when he saw a
young girl, one of his
patients who he said
would be dead in two
days, instantly restored
to health at Lourdes.
Years later Dr. Carvel
wrote: "Prayer is not
only worship, it is also an
invisible emanation of
man's worshipping spirit -
the most powerful form of,
energy one can generate.
If you make a habit of
prayer, your life will be
very noticeably and
profoundly altered,
lifted out of disease and
melancholy by the serene
effort of prayer."
Too many people
regard prayer as a for-
malized routine of
words: a refuge of
weaklings or a childish
petition for material
things. Properly un-
derstood, prayer .is a
mature activity, i
dispensable to the fullest
development of p r -
Mrs. Edith Barker, a 92 -year-old resident of
Maitland Manor, recently had a book published
containing a collection of poems capturing her
memories of experiences over the years. Here, she
is shown autographing some copies for Bill and
Doreen Garrow of Goderich who prepared the
manuscript for publication; Corinne King, wife of
the Reverend Ralph IXIng, minister of North Street
United Church where Mrs. Barker has taken an
active part as a member of the choir and as a
Sunday School teacher; and Mike Scott of Goderich
who did the art work for the cover. (Photo by
