Is nothing sacred
anymore? Reports have
been received from
various Ontario cities
that a publication using.
the name off Elmer the
Safety Elephant has been
soliciting advertising
from local businesses. I
mean really, what is the
world coming to!
But seriously though,
the Ontario Safety
League would like to
make it known that in no
way is the publication
associated with the
Canada Safety Council
(CSC), the Ontario Safety
League (OSL) or the
local police departments.
CSC holds the rights to
Elmer the Safety
Elephant. In Ontario, the
Elmer program is ad-
ministered by OSL and it
is utilized by schools and
police departments to
promote traffic safety in
Grades kindergarten to 6.
In many areas the
program is sponsored by
community -minded
service organizations.
Businesses have been
approached in the
Niagara Region, Toronto
and Oshawa to buy ad-
vertising in an alleged
safety publication
designed for children.
Elmer's name is being
used to lend authenticity.
Such contacts, if any
happen to occur around
here, should be reported
to local police or the
Better Business Bureau.
This safety con game is
no laughing matter to the
businesses which get
taken for a ride.
Would .the real Elmer
the Safety Elephant
please standup?

How do people view
politicians? With
suspicion, says a
university survey.
Politicians ranked 12th on
a list of 13 occupations in
terms of their likelihood
of selecting principles
over career expediency
when the two conflict. In
this respect, politicians
as an occupation group
rank just ahead of used
car sale en. These
were the finings of Dr.
Steven Br wn, a
assistant professor of
political science at
Wilfrid Laurier
University when he
surveyed more than 650
people in Kitchener -
W aterloo.
Clergymen, physicians
and policemen in that
order are seen as most
likely to follow their
principles when forced to
choose between the two
courses of action. Among
those further down the
list are dentists,
professors, auto
repairmen and retail
merchants.

Canada's wet spring
weather this year is
reflected in the Canadian
Forestry Service's first
forest fire report for the
1978 season, for the
month of April. Figures
are dramatically lower
than both those for last
year and seasonal
averages.
The total number of
fires across Canada
during the month of April
was 146, affecting 405
hectares of forest land. In
1977, the corresponding
figures were 1,040 fires
and 55,000 hectares. The
April average for the
decade 1968-1977 are 612
