DENIM
BY DAVID
•SAINT -JEAN
The end of the school year is upon us and with
it comes an end to the demented writings of the
notorious David Saint-Jean. Seriously though,
writing this column has been a great experience
. for me and I thank those who complimented me
on it as well as those who debated ,my views with
me,
A newspaper's main function, as I see it, is to
report the stories of the day. It is the people, the
readers who must make up their minds about
• who is right or wrong, whose side of the debate is
most -valid -and so on. It is Aly on these repoprts
and the subsequent public debate, whether that
debate be in the form of letters to the editor or an
informal chat over someone's kitchen table, that
informed opinions can be based.
Newspaper people, however, also have
opinions. The editorials in. a ' paper are a
reflection of the paper's concern for the com-
munity in which it operates. Hopefully, the
editorial comment in a paper brings forth
alternative points of view that may not be ob-
viou's at the first breaking of a story.
In DENIM I have tried to fill these two roles in
a hope, not only to report the events around
GDCI but to stimulate discussion on the issues
which affect our ..school and community. .My
.opinions were not always accepted (I didn't
expect them to be) but if they stimulated an
exchange of ideas in the halls of GDCI and got
people thinking about things, then they fulfilled
their purpose.
This column offered me a chance to put my
views on the line, to talk with the students of
GDCI (many whom I never would have met
otherwise) and exchange ideas with them. My
views were just that, my views. They were never
intended to represent the ideas of the entire
student body or any particular portion of it. I can
only repeat the fact that I hope they stimulated
valuable discussion.
In closing, I would like to thank tihe Signal Star
for Having the faith in me to give.me this space,
the people who encouraged me in my writing, my
mother and father for putting up with the
clacking of the typewriter and most of all, you
my readers for your kindness, your loyalty, your
suggestions and mostly your ideas. I found them
forthright and valuable, and a great help.
Thankyou again and see ya' around town.

Town's
bursary
still X500
The town's annual bursary for a deserving
student graduating from Goderich District
Collegiate Institute will remain unchanged at
$500. The decision was reached via recorded
vote on a motion introduced by Deputy -reeve
Eileen Palmer and Councillor John Doherty
who wanted to see the bursary split between•
two graduating students - a deserving mate and.
a deserving•female.
Only Councillor Stan Profit joined Palmer
and Doherty in support of the' motion. The vote
was 5-3 against the motion. Councillor Dave
Gower was absent from the meeting.
Palmer said the intent of the motion was to
help two students get on with post secondary
school education. She said that in relation to the
other financial awards .given at the school, the
town's bursary at $500 was very substantial.
"I believe that $250 each to two students is a
fair, logical distribution of funds," said
Palmer.
Councillor Elsa Haydon disagreed, saying
the $250 is "just a token" when tuition fees are
so high.
"That was not the intention of the bursary,"
said Haydon.
The bursary. has been awarded three times
now and in 1976 was split between two deser-
ving students. The decision is made by the
principal of GDCI and the staff, removing the
bursary from any political implications.

The upfront twosome of Anne and Nancy
Wilson, Heart founders, are currently the top-
selling lady rock and rollers.
Well, girls I hate to say it, but female rock has
got a l000ng way to come, album -wise if not
singles -wise.
Yeah, Heart is the finest hard -rock singles
hand going and one of the worst when it comes to
albums.
They have one fantastic single here, a live cut
entitled -Mother Earth Blues, which may never
see airplay because of a slight legal problem.
The legal problem is that there are outright
THEFTS from Led Zeppelin (and they tell us
they aren't trying to be like Zep. Come on, boys,
slap 'em with a plagiarism suit! You'll win hands
down in any court in the riff and vocal depart-
ments. And not too badly done either..But do you
think they give credit where due? Not here.
They even covered I've Got the Music in Me to
please the AM radio folk and it is not one of your
better versions. Bet it sells a million copies (if
released on a 45). Any takers. Didn't think so.
The rest is not worth mention.
Oh, yes, one thing I feel I should pass on. A
friend of mine reviewed this album without even
buying it, let alone hearing it. We compared
notes and agreed on everything.
Doesn't that tell you'soinething?
