Dear Editor,
After each letter I've
written to you, I vowed it
would be the last, that
I'm going to be normal
and not be publicly
proclaiming my views.
But how can I sit still
through this book -
banning business (I'll
never be normal!), when
I feel one of our basic
human rights is being
threatened, our right to
independent in-
vestigation of the truth?
To me this is a very
serious sign,and reminds
me of nations which
deliberately seek to
restrict the independence
off mind and spirit among
their citizens and by that
very policy have aroused
revolution within and
suspicion and fear out-
side their boundaries.
Is this what we want?
How can we hope to
encourage world -
mindedness in our youth,
which could quite con-
ceivably be our only hope
for survival on this
planet?
Senior students are not
children. Theyare young
adults, capable of judging
for themselves and
coming to their own
conclusions, and direc-
ting their own lives, And
it is their God-given right
to do so.
If in their family life
they have known love and
mutual respect, sound
spiritual guidance, good
speech and a healthy,
responsible attitude
towards sex, they should
be capable of discerning
the true from the false,
and right from wrong and
of seeing things in their
true proportions. Lacking
this, banning is not The
answer. Education is the
answer.
To quote from a
favourite prayer, "0
God, make Thou this
home of ours the garden
of affection, a ripening
place wherein the hidden
powers of our hearts may
unfold, expand, and bear
the fruit of an abiding
joy "
Surely this is the whole
purpose of education,
whether in the home or in
the school, and our
teachers who play such a
vital role in this
development deserve our
deepest respect and, full
support.
But in the end, the
freedom to choose must
remain the right of the
individual.
Yours sincerely,
Phyllis Durst.
CWL right!
Dear Editor,
In the leading article on
MR. AND MRS. RICHA.RD•HOOD
April wedding
June 8, "Teachers should
rule on dirty books"
several points were
scored by three people.
Tom Collins, Paul Rob
and Peggy Rivers. In
spite of their intellectual
fireworks they are sadly
at fault.
"You trust your doc-
tors, and your ministers,
you'd better trust your
teachers."
It isn't true. You trust
your doctor but not for
malpractice. As for
ministers they are not
implicitly trusted fbr we
move when our trust is
lost in a given setting.
Blind trust of teachers
is as evil as trust of
Hitler, Mussolini or
Franco. The very thing
Collins claims as the
ultimate end of all
education is here set on
the shelf. Think for
yourself. Mr. Collins is
carried away,by a simple
threat to his authority.
Rivers' remark about
notoriety for Huron
County is pure scare
tactics. Whatever hap-
pened to heated townhall
sessions in our celebrated
participatory
democracy? Is Rivers
dispensing'. with it by.
hoisting some form of -
subversion scare of the
honest good folk of
Kingsbridge! She has lost
all credibility in my book.
If parents cannot
mount a protest
something is radically
wrong. Rightly or
wrongly motivated they
are entitled to a voice.
Confusion arises from the
fact that authority does
not reside in any one
camp.
This debate demon-
strates there are five
camps; home, school,
church, expertise of
professionals and mass
media. There is a need to
respect each domain and
not raid a one fifth
authority base to
aggrandize one's own
own camp.
Rivers attempts this by
innuendo. Parents do
have substantial rights to
mount a protest regar-
dless of the sanctity of
expertise.
One historical occasion
pilts this in perspective. A
sharp quarrel between
the Holy Roman
Emperor and the Pope
caused one prelate and
partisan to pray: "Sit
firm on thy throne, 0
Lord or Henry will push
you off ! "
Ross argues to each his
own authority. Fair. But
he too oversteps, any
bounds of mutual trust.
The parents are legally
creators, stewards and
trustees of the school. It
is really not just the
group who mounted this
objection, rightly or
wrongly, who are in-
volved. The issue is based
on a concern of a genuine
nature no matter who
