The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-05-18, Page 39Roun
Recently I met a very nice
couple who have moved to
Goderich and taken over
management of the
Bluewater Motel on Bayfield
Road. They have been in this
area less than two years,
having lived in Bayfield a
year or so when they decided
they had to DO something- be
busy!
Betty and Jack Wheeler, I
find, are people who have
always been busy, involved
especially with young people
most of their lives.
For 25 years Mr. Wheeler
travelled for Fina Oil Com-
pany of Canada from Corn-
wall to Sault Ste. Marie,
across to Sudbury, Timmins,
Noranda, Quebec and all the
stations in between. But he
was used to travelling, he had
travelled thousands of miles
while in the .Canadian Navy
having been round the world
twice, touching 84 ports --
Africa, India, Great Britain,
Australia and thy' many
islands around the world.
Jack's home town was
u
t...
Pickering - up Ottawa way -
and Betty's home was
Toronto where her father
involved her in the business of
antiques, arts and crafts. She
worked in an office in
Toronto. One day, she and
Jack met and it was love at
first sight. Jack kids her by
saying she was the first white
girl he had seen in four years.
And so, they were married.
After he left the Navy, they
settled in Palmerston and
farmed for• ten years
becoming involved with their
•1
first love children -
ANYF3ODY'S children.
They found they. had an
empathy for the emotionally
disturbed child and were soon
'the "parents" to dozens of
young people. They have only
a son and a daughter of their
own but hundreds call them
"Mum and Dad". \ .
Son Bill is with the A.T.V. --
an affiliate of the C.T.V.
network. He started with
another network at Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan where
he met the Honourable John
Diefenbaker. He now resides
in Prince Edward Island,
where; like his father, he was
soon involved with the Scouts
and other young people's
groups. He called his dad one
night saying„ "I wish you
were here, my Scouts are
becoming co-educational and
I need help!"
His sister, Marsha, lives in
Bayfield with husband Gary
Triebner and wee daughter
Jennifer.
When Jack and Betty
Wheeler moved from
Bayfield, six teenagers
whisked • them to their new
quarters, bag and baggage,
furniture, pots and pans and
settled them in so fast, they
couldn't believe it. The kids
stop in frequently to see how
they are and if they need.

In their new business the
Wheeler's are still getting
acquainted and they have had
little time to get to know
Goderich.
1 think Goderich will soon
get better acquainted with
these nice people and I am
proud that I "found" them.

- a dittie played over CKNX
back in the forties? Call me!
Here's a little thought --
fear not the rivals who
imitate you...those who walk
in your footsteps cannot pass
you. So you must always be
your best - I think!
