is the building of a com-
munity centre in the Indian
community of Attawapiskat,
in James Bay area. This
community had nothing says
Mrs. Neville until some ladies
from the provincial chapter
took it under their wing.
Materials for the centre were
shipped up and chapters
across the province con-
tributed money to furnish the
centre with such things as
washing machines, sewing
machines and even a plastic
greenhouse for the short
growing season. The com-
munity is now much more
self-sufficient.
One member of the Ahmeek
Chapter, Mrs. J. Calvin Cutt,
makes quilts for Sick
Children's Hospital in Lon-
don. This was a project she
started many years ago.
Each year a large number
are sent and the letters pf
thanks Mrs. Cutt receives
proves how much the hospital
appreciates receiving them
from the Chapter says Mrs.
Neville.
Hospital gowns are made
from men's used white shirts
and also this year summer
dresses for little girls are
being made from men's used
shirts to be sent to the
provincial chapter for
distribution to the needy.
Baby layettes are also in-
-clucked in these bales:
Locally when requests fin-
cash
orcash donations are received
by the Ahmeek Chapter, they
are dealt with as funds
permit:; The chapter has
donated to the St. John
Ambulance, Girl Guides,
Canadian Legion Poppy Fund
and the arena fund to names
just a few. In addition the
chapter is still faithful to the
hospital helping when
possible to purchase equip-
ment. A microscope was
donated which enabled blood
tests to be made here rather
than the delay of sending out
of town and 'waiting for
reports. A quite small por-
table X-ray unit was also
donated which allowed
certain X-rays to be done
without having to move the
patients to the X-ray
department. Some I.O.D.E.
members help repair linens
at the hospital and others
assist with Meals -on -Wheels.
Visiting. people at Huron -
view and Maitland Manor is
yet another way in which the
Ahmeek members par-
-ticipate in the community. A
national project entitled
Concern for the Elderly,
encourages I.O.D.E. mem-
bers to go out and visit the
elderly.
The I.O.D.E. makes
representation to the
government. The national;
and provincial chapters do
this to represent the primary
chapters across the country
such a's the Ahmeek and the
Maple Leaf Chapters. For
example, a letter to the
Minister of Health and
Finance requesting . that the
government reconsider its
intention to cut grants for
medical research was sent by
the I.O.D.E. along with copies
of that letter to the ministers
and leaders of other parties.
The' minister replied and
noted that two million dollars
had been allotted for the
grants and Mrs. Neville says
she feels that the I.O.D.E.
influence had something to do
with this figure.
The Queen is a patron of
I.O.D.E. which is therefore
allowed `o use her name, says
Mrs. Neville. The Victoria
League in England is the
counterpart to Canada's
I.O.D.E. During the Queen's
Silver Jubilee last year, the
I.O.D.E. sent a letter to the
Postmaster General
suggesting that a com-
memorative stamp for this
occasion be issued and it was.
The Ahmeek Chapter has
several life members,
honorary members and
regular mem-bersy several
who have their 25 year pins.
Mrs. W.G. MacEwan
received her 50 year pin
several years back. Even so,
says Mrs. Neville, those who
do not have a long service pin,
do work hard and are a real
credit and help to the Ahmeek
Chapter. In order to raise
money for chapter projects,
they organize dessert -card
parties, hold an annual Tag
Day in June, have rummage
and bake sales, quilt draws
and fashion shows. And Mrs.
Neville would emphasize
again that all members are
volunteers, people who are
interested in helping others
and concerned for the welfare
of all.
MAPLE LEAF CHAPTER
WORK
One of the chief sources of
income for the Maple Leaf
Chapter of the I.O.D.E. is the
Opportunity Shop which was
started in 19.53. This shop is
open Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Saturdays from 2 to 4
p.m. and is manned by
volunteers of the chapter. It
has a two fold purpose. It
serves a need in the com-
munity by providing
reasonably priced second
hand clothing and other items
to those who need it and
4
secondly, the revenue from
the shop as well as the Maple
Leaf Chapter's" many other
projects, allows the chapter
to provide high school bur-
saries, -scholarships, awards
for public speaking, social
studies, Canadian studies and
