Dear Editor:
At this time of year the
Goderich District Association
for the Mentally Retarded
prepares for Mental
Retardation week - May,14 to
20. "Again this year our
preparation centres around
our concern for operating
funds to supplement
government grants in
maintaining and improving
what we consider to be ex-
ceptional facilities for the
handicapped in a smaller
community.
This year we will join other
mentally retarded locals
across Canada in soliciting
donations from homes
through the "Flowers of
Hope" campaign. While this
should raise some operating
funds, we are depending even
more on the generosity of
merchants, businesses,..
associations, clubs and
municipalities.
In requesting aid we realize
that all of the above have
many demands• such as ours
upon available ;Funds, are
restricted by budgets like
anyone else, and have
favourite groups that they are
already supporting - in some
cases this is the Goderich
District Association for the
Mentally Retarded. -.
Bearing this in mind we
request that you consider our
needs in your support of local
charities. •
Our requirements this year
are concentrated in three
areas: summer camp for
retarded and handicapped
children; expansion of our
Adult Rehabilitation Centre'
to provide guidance to more
young retardees and enable
them to become a meaningful
part of local society; and
opening of a group home to
provide 'the entrance of
trained handicapped persons
into the daily life of this
community. We hope to
operate this home on a budget
of $85,000 per annum.
Any donation is gratefully
'received. For specific
planned donations, we ..offer
the 'following: $50 will entitle
the donor to a corporate
membership for one year
from July 1, 1978; and $250
will send one ,child to camp
for a week and entitle the
donor to a corporate mem-
bership.
Any donation may be
sp-e-cifically allocated
towards camp, workshop or
group home support or to the
work of the Association in
general. •
