BY W.E. ELLIOTT
"The official opening of the
Max Bell Centre at the Lester
B. Pearson College of the
Pacific, at Pedder Bay, 15
mile's west of Victoria, will,
take place this afternoon.
Pearson College is one of
three United World Colleges.
Earl Mountbatten of Burma
is president of the United
World Colleges. The chair-
man of Parson College is
John L. Nichol of Vancouver.
Until he resigned in 1973 he
was a Senator. Now he has
several business interests.
His wife, Elizabeth Fellowes
Nichol, owns the Equinox Art
Gallery in Vancouver."
-Toronto Globe and Mail,
Dec. 14, 1977
+
Col. Robert Nichol, soldier
and legislator, .came from
Scotland in 1795 and settled in
Norfolk. General Brock
appointed him quar-
termaster -general and he
distinguished himself in the
1812 - 15 war with the United
States. His wife was Theresa
Wright, a grand -daughter of
Hon. Alexander Grant,
Their son, Robert K.
Addison Nichol, Q.C., resided
first at Vienna, then for some
years in Goderich. The Huron
County directory for 1863 - 66
lists "Robert Nichol,
barrister, attorney-at-law,
conveyancer, notary public;
office in Crabbe's Block,
Kingston street, Goderich,
C.W.,,
Christopher Crabb, mer-
chant, vacated in 1860' the
apartment over his store, and
Nichol may have had living
quarters there as welt as his
office. Nichol's wife was
Cynthia Jane Ballard.
Their son, Walter Cameron
Nichol, born in Goderich in
1866, became a junior
reporter with the Hamilton
Spectator, then worked on
papers in Toronto and London
before moving to British
Columbia, but all biographers
describe him as "a Goderich
boy"
He developed the Van-
couver Province to its present
eminence in the West,
became a very wealthy man,
and served as lieutenant -
governor of British Columbia.
He married Quita Josephine
March Moore, daughter of
Dr. Charles G. Moore, of
London, Ont.
They had a son, John Moore
Nichol, and a daughter,
Maraquita, who married E.
Roll Mainguy, of the Royal.
Canadian Navy. John Moore
Nichol married Sally Lang,
and their son, John Lang
Nichol, who became
president of 'the Liberal
Federation of Canada and a
close friend of Prime
Minister Lester Pearson.
Peter C. Newman in one of
his books has written that
"outside his office Pearson
relied on the friendship and
solid counsel of John Nichol, a
Vancouver businessman of
good, ,humor, considerable
elegane and firm realism,
whom he eventually named to
the Senate".
Mr. Nichol - married
Elizabeth Fello',nes, and th
have three daughters,
resigned from the Senate
become chairman of Pears
College. •
