FEET FIRST
: BOOT CONSTRUCTION
In selecting cross-country boots make sure they ore
flexible yet at the some time provide good support. The
flexibility will allow maximum heel lift which is important.
Boots with a full steel shank should be given first con-
sideration as they'provide added durability but most impor-
tantly provide the needed support to the foot on uneven
terrain. Boots without this shank tend to twist away from the
ski when sloped to the side.
The two most common typos in Ski Touring boots are
Plastic and all Rubber types the latter being more expen,
sive, however, the better value buy. The difference is that
all rubber types are much more durable, tend to be more
flexible yet will lost longer. The Plastic type requires a steel
toe plate for support. In time, you will find this Plastic type
will separate at the sole or crack across the sole where it is
joined to the plate. Your feet will also get colder with this
type of sole. ,
As for as the upper shoe goes. there ore two types
available—Leather or Vinyl. Vinyl uppers are naturally
waterproof and require minimal core. However, moisture
tends to accumulate inside the boot which results in cold
feet. Leather uppers ore more rugged, "breathe" well and
are less likely to crack. Like Vinyl, Factory treated Leather '
boots require minimal core. Snuggly fitting snow cuffs help
to prevent wet feet. Shoes that hove cuff below the ankle
should be leather lined os they dry quickly. Fleece lining in
the higher cut boots assist in keeping your feet worm. In
deep snow, "leggings" called Gators will assist in keeping
you dry.
Next week the Ski. See you then.
