winter, I'm afraid.
Our trip south was not too
exciting. You keep up with
the traffic which is going
mostly 65 to 75 mph. From
Detroit to well past Toledo the
smog and fumes were
terrible, unbelievable.
After all the car packing
and4rush-rush I had to foul my
back up somehow -the well
packed suitcases being lifted
into the car, I think, did it.
Anyway the first day I was
tired and in misery and then
from Toledo on it POURED
and poured. So about 3:30 I'd
had it and we stopped for the
night.
Next morning the fog was
so thick we didn't dare start
out till after ten. It's going to
be a short day, I thougjit.
Once through Dayton, Ohio
you are soon into the Ken-
tucky, mountains and their
beautiful coloring. Well it just
seems like those mountains
last for days - they actually
do, but we went all the way to
Marietta, Georgia, before we
stopped for the night.
Next day more drizzle then
just cloudy. We had started
about 9:30 and I was deter-
mined to get to Sarasota
before it was dark. I didn't
realize how far I was away
from my goal. By the time we
hit the Florida border the sky
was clear and the sun was
-,shining and HOT.
"You're making pretty
good time," Walt said. We'd
cut the coffee breaks down by
quite a bit and I was rolling
along. No one drove at 55 - if
you slowed to 60 you were
creating a traffic hazard!
So -- I remembered other
years entering Florida you
didn't see a patrol car at all in
the first hundred miles.
Traffic was going pretty fast
and so did I.
"I figure we should be in
Tampa by nine, anyway." I
didn't say a word just kept
watching fore and aft for any
indications of the police.
Later - "Only a hundred
and fifty miles to Tampa -
you're doing fine."

"We're not there yet," I
mumbled.
Soon I heard "Well, you've
got the first hundred out of
the way, we might be there by
eight--."
I figured my luck might run
out any time now - I was
asking,. for it - So I slowed
down. There were eight to ten
cars in a group jockeying in
and out, back and forth and I
had slowed to 60 or 65 when
the group of cars that had
been away back were sud-
denly juggling their way
through. The ones ahead of
me slowed down quite a bit
and I just had to move out.
When I got into the passing
lane some character stayed
ahead of me - and a car and a
truck sealed off the three
lanes. I turned on my
headlights - usually a good
indication someone wants, to
pass - no go - he was busy

talking with his hands and nut
looking back. I trieehe lights
again a little later, but no. I
had a big truck right on my
tail, I knew he wanted to go
through and cars in a pack
right across the lanes.
I was on the verge of
blowing the horn when he
suddenly switched lanes and I
dashed through with two or
three cars in hot pursuit - then
I' saw HIM - in the middle of
the media, yet! Aloud I said,
"Oh, oh!" I headed for the
slow lane but I could see him
coming and in a few seconds
he was behind me blinking his
little lights. I peeked in the
rear view mirror, again, and
he motioned with his hand to
pull over - I motioned back,
"Who, ME?" Sure enough,
the nicest young man was
asking for my drivers licence.
"Did you realize, mam,
that you were doing 74 in a
passing lane?"
I had enough sense to not
answer THAT. Any fool could
plainly see I'd never got
through in less than 74 - and I
could see it! But then I'm a
fool anytime! So, he told me
where I could mail my very
first citation - or take it in
person, and he hoped I'd be
more cautious - - -.
"Oh I WAS being cautious -
if they hadn't crowded me in,
I'd have seen you -" and we
both laughed - HE laughed
LAST!
I'm not telling you how
much my citation was worth
but 1 breathed a sigh of relief
when I read it. So, Walt was
grinning - "Well, that's the
fastest ticket 1 ever saw any
one get" - by this, time I had
almost reached 65 again. It's
that car! I swear! It cruises
beautifully - just purrs along -
at 75!
So we reached 'home' by
7:30 and 'none of us could
believe it. Marietta to
Sarasota, Hwy. 75 and•41 is a
good long trip.
Doug and Madeline were
waiting at Walt's 'brothers'
place - and they hail our place
aired, and lights and water
turnd on, the weeds pulled
and the patio swept. What a
nice surprise. It really lifted
me out of my gloom. But for
the thousands of miles I've
driven - for at least forty
years; outside of a $2 parking
ticket in Town years ago - it
was my very first Citation!
Now, DON'T say "We wish
you many more - - -! "
Well, tomorrow we are
going into Venice to see the
last day of their "Sun Fiesta"
- a whole week of fun en-
tertaining, parades, fairs and
so many other things. The
annual air show has grown to

see part of i,t Saturday and
more on Sunday. The people
down here really turn out and
