A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1977 Solar heat aids wood stove "As consumers we are programmed to waste energy to add to the profit of the ▪ supplier" observes Tony McQuail who Is teaching a night school course on Alternate Energy Sources at Goderich Disti.14-1 Collegiate Institute and F. Madill Secondary School in W inghant "We are sold on wasting energy to get quality of life and then the products don't deliver what is promised by the advertising," comments McQuail. ''Electricity to provide heat is the most inefficient and inappropriate ttse of energy„ yet we are inundated ' with ad- vertisements that tell us it is efficient, modern, clean and inexpensive." „Besides the consumption of a resource that is non- renewable, use of the elec- tricity where it is inap- propriate is becoming costlier'," he adds. The courses began Monday, October ..4 in Goderich and on Wednesday.. Topics such as reducing our dependency on energy consumption, depletion of our supply, Eeopleicular The house built by Tony and Fran McQuail on their farm at RK 1 I.ucknow is heated by passive solar heating due to the situation and construction design of the house. At present the house is heated by the sun, without a collector such as solar panels, and a ther- mostatically controlled wood stove as a back up unit. Walkom came to Goderich from Prince Edward County to take over teaching duties in industrial arts classes at Goderich District Collegiate Institute. He taught at the high school for 27 years until his retirement. During that time he served the town -as a council member for 22 years and was elected mayor for one two year term. He represented Goderich voters at the county level serving exhuastion of sources energy too quickly will be con- sidered. They burn no heating oil; they have no hydro or natural gas. They use about 50 gallons of kerosene a year for lighting ;ind cooking and` about four cords of wood for heating and cooking. Their bill for elec- tricity. kerosene. 'batteries ,ind chain saw gas would approach $•100 for the year. Tony is quick to point out that he is not trying to per- suade anyone to adopt his lifestyle. He does suggest however that there are ways which everyone can reduce his -her •consunmption of energy and resources without lowering their quality of life. Proper insulation of your house. turning down ther- mostats on sunny winter days, using sunlight to read by and turning off lights, television and radios w -hen there is no one in the room are all ways of conserving energy and reducing heat •ind elect!:icity bills.. "Conservation is plugging the holes in .your billfold," says Tony. The course is designed to provoke people to consider systems that can. he used which will present the greatest number of options for the future. Electric baseboard heaters with resistance coils offer no tither option than an electric source to heat the coils.
