The GDCI senior girls
basketball team continued to
hold onto first place in the
Huron Perth Conference
standings despite losing their
Juniors win and lose
in two close decisions

The GDCI junior girls
basketball team won one
game by two points and lost
one by three points in two
exciting Huron -Perth Con-
ference games last week.
Tuesday, in Exeter, coach
John Geiger's girls won 19-:
over South Huron. Thursday,
Lions four wins

The Goderich Lions Pee
Wees are off to a roaring start
in WOAA hockey action. The
Lions have won their first
four gam -es, with three of the
victories coming last week.
Wednesday, in Port Elgin
the Lions scored three goals
in the third period to take a 5-
1 verdict over Port Elgin.
Returning home, Thursday,
they again put on a third
period spurt, coming from
behind a 3-1 score, to defeat
Hanover 5-3. Saturday the
Lions made the return visit to
Hanover a successful one by
blasting the Hanover squad,
this time by a 10-3 score.
These victories, along with
their earlier 9-1 win over
Mount Forest, leave the Lions
atop the league standings in
the early going.
Tonight_. (Thursday) the
Lions attempt to extend their
winning streak when they
journey to Listowel. Next
home game for the Lions is
next Thursday at 8 p.m. when
Walkerton will be the op-
position.
Against Port Elgin, team
captain Dave Gallow scored
twice. John Thompson, Daryl
Madge an.: Paul Day scored
the other goals. Mark
Crawford had two assists
while Paul Day, Randy
Yundt, John Peters and
Philip Wood were each
credited with one assist.
Dino Crossetta and Scott
Arnett scored for Port Elgin.
Five players 'scored single
goals in the Lions home ice
victory over Hanover. John
Thompson, Randy Yundt,
David Gallow, Brad Arm-
strong and David Day were
the goal -getters. Paul Leh-
man had two and Hohn
Walker one for the visitors.
Picking up assists for the
Lions were Paul Brenner,
Daryl Madge and Randy
Yundt.
The Lions put their best
offensive effort of the season
together against Hanover
Saturday, scoring twice in the
first period, five times in the
second, and adding three
more in the third.
The line of David Gallow,
Mark Crawford and Daryl
Madge sparked the offensive
display with eight of the
goals. Gallow had four goals
and two assists, Crawford
had three goals and four
assists and Madge had one
goal and three assists.
Brad Armstrong scored the
other two Goderich goals; one
on a penalty shot in the
second period and the other
on a pass from John Thom-
pson in the third period.
David Day. and Philip Wood
had one assist each.
Paul Osborne had two goals
and Chris Ahrens one for
Hanover.
Coaches Richard Madge
and Bob Dick, along with
manager Bill Crawford,
expressed satisfaction with
the way the Lions have ad-
justed so quickly to the
system of play they are at-
tempting to develop.

With Tess than 30 seconds
remaining, in the game with
Exeter Sonja Lapaine, the
Viking's top scorer with a
total of eight points in the
game, sunk a basket to put
Goderich on top by one point.
Tracy Jewell gave the
Vikings a three point bulge
with her basket, but Exeter
came hack with a foul shot
with one second left, leaving
the Vikings up by two at the
buzzer.
Jewell had a total of six
points. Sharon Burbine added
five while Bonnie Reid and
Marg Conlon each had four
points. Jenny More had two
points to round out the
Goderich scoring.
Helen Muller, with 10 points
for Exeter, was the game's
top scorer.
The Viking loss to Stratford
was an overtime affair in
which coach Geiger felt his
team outplayed the winners
but•could not score the points
to win it.
Stephanie aOchman was
Stratford's best with 11
points.
Sonja Lapaine and Heidi
Elliott each had nine for
Goderich. Marg Conlon had
six and Tracy Jewell four for
the losers.
The Vikings record now
stands at seven wins and two
losses. They played i'n
Stratford against Nor-
thwestern Tuesday and move
into sudden -death semi-final
playoff action today
(Thursday).

Doidge's team suffered their
first set back when they
dropped a single point
decision,, 1-8-1:7, to South
Huron in Exeter. Thursday
here, however, they came
back with a 49-31 victory over
Stratford Central.
With a record of eight wins
and one loss, the GDCI girls
had one game remaining in
the schedule. That was
played Tuesday in Stratford,
against Northwestern. With
first place virtually assured,
the Vikings will probably
begin the playoffs with a
sudden death semi-final
game here today (Thursday ).
In the game in Exeter, the
GDCI team was led by Lucie
Turcotte with 10 points. Joni
Thompson had 5 points and
the Vikings and and Anne
Marie Murphy and Karen
Pond each had four.
Against Stratford Central,
Audrey Vandenheuvel played
an outstanding game, scoring
17 points and hauling in over
half the rebounds taken by
her team. Lucie Turcotte had
another good game, scorin
16 points and Anne Ma
Murphy contributed four to
the Viking total.

Juveniles dump St. Marys
8-1 for second win

Juveniles racked up their
second straight win as they
hammered St. Mary's 8-1 in a
game played in Goderich
Sunday.
Goderich held a slim one-
• goal lead after the first period
of play but increased the
margin to four with three
second period goals.- They
scored four times in the thirtl
period before St. Mar
replied with their only goal.
Paul Schaefer and Bill
Lewis led the Goderich of-
fence with three goals apiece.
The duo dominated the
scoring statistics as Schaefer
added two assists for a five
point night while Lewis
picked up three assists for six
points:
Schaefer gave Goderich a 1-
0 first period lead after
converting a pass form team-
mat,:s Phil Arthur and Lewis.
Thr trio of Arthur -Lewis and
Schaefer each scored a goal
in the second period to in -
.crease the Goderich lead to
four.
Lewis completed his three
goal performance early in the
third period while teammate
Hugh Hanly produced a goal
on an unassisted effort in
between Lewis tallies.
Schaefer set up the third
Lewis goal and had the favor
returned less than a minute
later as he banged in his third
goal on a pass from Lewis and
Ed Courtney.
Murray Atchison spoiled
John Page's shutout bid late
in the final period scoring on
a pass from John Bailey and
Scott Ferguson.
The win was the second for
the juveniles who dumped
Lambeth 8-5 in their opening
game. They return to action
this Saturday in Goderich
against Listowel. Game time
is 8 p.m.
