Press and CKNX. She gets I'
paid next to nothing for her
work which can be very time
consuming. Many people call
her with news items and she
does some calling herself. She
enjoys talking to her neigh-
bors whether it is regarding
news for the column or not.
"I can make myself busy at
home but I wouldn't want to
be without neighbors," she
says.
Mrs. McCharles has a
number of activities•besidesa'
writing the news that keep
her busy. She calls herself a
jack of all trades, master of
none. She enjoys baking,
quilting and embroidery. She
has a special interest in
painting. She teaches por-
celain or china painting at
night school in Ripley. She
paints nature scenes and
flowers of her own designs
and patterns on china plates
and tiffany style lamps.
Painting, says Mrs.
McCharles, was something
she always wanted to do. She
had an aunt who was a
beautiful painter andan
inspiration to her. She feels
that porcelain painting is
almost a lost art.. She sent for
books on the subject and took
a few lessons from a teacher.
She also studied art at Beale
Technical School in London,
Ontario, where she did oil
paintings and water colors.
Mrs. McCharles is the past
president of the Ripley and
District Horticultural
Society. She has a garden in
which she grows all her own
vegetables to preserve. She
has taken a two year course
in Hamilton on flower
arranging, growing,
exhibiting and judging. She
also took a judging course in
Guelph and has judged floral
exhibits at country fairs all
across Ontario. Both she and
her husband have. worked for
the Ministry of Food and
Agriculture- in the --past' as
qualified judges at fairs. Her
husband judged garden
produce and cattle while she
judged flower exhibits.
Travelling to the fairs, says
Mrs. McCharles, was like a
working vacation for her.
husband and her. Judging is
both an interesting and
., rewarding experiences, she
says.
Fair boards today find their
own judges rather than going
through the Ministry but Mrs,
McCharles is still often asked
to judge fair exhibits. She has
been exhibiting her own
crafts and 'baked goods at
fairs for over 90 years. "I
could be on the go (to fairs)
all the time if I wanted to be,"
she says.
She has received many
prizes for her exhibits but she
says it is not theprize itself
that is important but rather
.the sense of accomplishment
one feels for having done
something well.
In 1971, Mr. and Mrs..
McCharles, along with Mr.
and Mrs. Reg Jones and Mr.
and Mrs. Dan McInnes,
founded the Lucknow Craft
Festival. 'Mr. and Mrs.
McCharles are now one of
five couples who make up
Huron -Bruce Arts and Crafts
Incorporated which holds an
arts and crafts show annually
in Ripley.
Mrs. McCharles served
three years as a director on
the Ontario Fair Board
representing Bruce and Grey
Counties. She attended 28
fairs during her term and
helped iron out problems. She
wasn't paid for this work but
she enjoyed helping the
...c`bmmunities she
represented. Mrs. McCharles
was also one of the first
women to represent the
ladies' section of the Lucknow
fair.
She is a past secretary -
treasurer of the Ashfield
Federation of Agriculture
and her husband is a past
president of the same
Federation. She is a member
of St. Andrew's United
Church in Ripley and belongs
to the UCW as well.
Mrs. McCharles was born
at home on the farm about
two and a half miles from
Ripley. When she was young,
her father had to move his
family from their farm
because of his health. They
went to London where he
worked as a butcher -grocer.
He never sold the farm
however and when Mrs.
McCharles was about 15 the
family returned to the farm.
Mrs. McCharles completed
Grade 13 at Ripley high
school before going to London
to study art: School• came
easy to her. She especially
enjoyed math and history.
She has researched the
history of Lochalsh schools
because of her interest in the
community and !'istory.

her home, Mrs. McCharles
says, "The farm's a great
place to live. Having lived in
both the city and the country,
I feel that the country is the
ideal place to bring up
children. They learn first
hand the love of nature and
the love of God."
Mrs. McCharles loves
nature, teaching crafts and
helping her fellow man. She
has had over 20 operations in
her lifetime and spent two
years in a wheelchair. There
have been times when, she
was not expected to live. But
Mrs. McCharles has a healthy
philosophy. "Sometimes
we're laid low to (earn things
about ourselves," she says.
When she was laid low, she
learned patience and un-
derstanding and she learned
to do things with her hands.
Mrs. McCharles says a
person can only live one day
at a time. She keeps on the go
and tries to live each day to
its fullest. And a full life to
Mrs. McCharles means
helping others and making a
contribution to the little
community that she loves to
call home.
