to
C season
The Goderich Sailors are
back after a year's layoff
from Intermediate C action.
The Sailors didn't form last
year due to the closing of the
Goderich arena but this year
a renewed interest has been
shown in the club and the
Sailors will be skating every
Friday night in their league
home games.
The Sailors opened their
exhibition season last night
against Wingham and Friday
host Port Elgin. Crucikshank
is working with four sets of
offensive players and three
defensive pairings. He says
he has n6t made any firm
decisions on lines for the
season but adds that- he is
impressed with what he has
seen so far.
John Hanly and Gord
McIntyre will •be playing
opposite one another on the
blue line and Jim Hayter
returned this year and is
playing, so far, alongside
Wayne Rau. Dirk Wolterbeek
and Wayne Cummings make
up the third defensive line.
Up front Paul Rau will be
centering Steve Buchanan on
the left and Ron Baker on the
right. Paul Kelly will. be
between Dan Duncan on the
left and Ken Meriam. Kevin
Meriam will have Steve
Davey and Grant Skelton in
the corners and Jim Farrish
is between Rob Stanton and
Wayne Kennedy.
Ruby Fleischauer will be
minding the net for the
Sailors against Wingham and
Cruickshank has not decided
who will be starting against
Port Elgin. The Sailors first
home game of the season will
be Friday, November 4.

The Merchants have been
holding regular workouts for
the past few weeks and
/played their first game
recently against Huron Park
winning 8-2. Tonight they face
Centralia College of
Agriculture in Clinton and
rookie coach Gary Miller will
be juggling personnel to try to
set his tines and defensive
pairings for the year.
Miller has 22 players to
work with. He has until
January 10 to trim his players
list to 18 up front and two
netminders. He is hoping
many of the players working
out with the Merchants stay
active giving him and his
assistants time to have a
thorough look at them.
Miller, whose experience at
coaching was in an Industrial
League in Kitchener, has
been stressing conditioning in
early workouts and uses his
practice time to work his
players in stops, starts and
stamina drills. He puts his
netminders through rigorous
drills aimed at improving
their stamina and sharpness.,
In goal Miller has moved
Doug Fisher into the number
one spot. Fisher played with
the club last year along with
Rick Duckworth but Duck-
worth is not playing this year.
Mike Russelo, who is also
playing with the Godericheri•
Oldtimers, has been with the
club from the start and may
get the nod for some net -
minding chores. Miller is
hopeful more goaltenders will
come out to practice ensuring
him of at least two goalies
dressed for every game.
On defense Miller has
looked at sixplayers. Against
Huron Park he paired Ron
Corriv*au, Tom O'Brik, Phil
Petrie, Bin Warilo arry"
Bloch and Mark Ryan and is
juggling the combinations
looking for a strong back
court.
Miller used three offensive
combinations, some
holdovers from last year and
some new players. Ron
Whetstone is back this year
centering Cam MacDonald,
last year's league scoring
champion, on left wing and
Milt Place on the right. Frank
Hagan plays between Paul
Corriveau on the left and Pat
Mahon on the right and John
Hoy centered George Gould
and Doug Smith.
Miller says the Merchants
look good for the year and
claims that Intermediate D
action promises to be en-
tertaining for fans. He says
the hockey is wide open and
clean but needs fan support to
make it complete.
