French ripped the front running Huromic Metal squad for seven points that allowed the Recalls and.Little Bowl to slip into a first place tie, one point ahead on Cindy Smith of the Robertson senior girls cross country team leads the pack through a water logged trail in Point Farms Provincial Park in the girls heat of the elementary school competition. Smith led most of the way along with Brenda Fisher of Colborne and narrowly edged Fisher with a final kick at the wire to grab first in the event. The runners completed a three kilometre course through the park. (staff -photo) Huromic. Little Bowl raked the hapless Augies Dogies for seven points to boost their season point total to 25. Jim McWhinney topped the bowlers with a 273 single and 693 triple. Robert Glen rolled a 217 single for the Dogies and John Miller chipped in with a 588 triple. In a second match featuring front runners, the Recalls managed a four night against the B.D. 's to earn a share of the league lead with 25 points. Leo Baker topped the Recalls with a 258 single and Charlie Williams had a 700 triple. Barry Good's 592 triple clinched three points for the Minor teams begin season The r977-78 minor hockey season gets its official start here tonight when the Goderich Lions Pee Wees begin their WOAA schedule against Mount Forest. Game time is 8 p.m. Coach, of the Lions this season is Richard Madge. Bob Dick is his assistant and Bill Crawford is team manager. The other Goderich Minor Hockey- teams swing into action this weekend, with Atom Bantam, and Midget games Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. and Novice and - Juvenile games Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. Bill Martin and Doug Huff are the coach and manager of the Atoms, while Dick McLean, Brian Rumig and Jim Gilchrist are handling the Bantams. Bill Gallow, Mike Pope, Keith Huisser and: Dave McIver are overseeing the midgets. Bill Garrow and Dan Duncan are coach and manager of the Novice team and Doug Cruickshank is coach of the juvenile squat: and Bill Schaefer is manager. B.D.'s who stayed alive in the race by raising their season total to 29 points, good for a share of second, place with Huromic. Carson Miller led the French bowlers with an impressive 296 single and 758 triple. The seven points give French a total of 21 for the year which nails down fourth spot in the league. A fine performance by Jerry Rivett was eclipsed by the Huromic loss as he bowled a 333 single and 845 triple. In other action the Hopefuls took four points from the Signal -Stars to increase their season total to 21 along with French. Don Siemon rolled a 287 single and 731 triple for the Hopefuls. The three points left the Stars in fifth place with 18. Paul Steep was their top bowler with a 305 single and 857 triple. Ri'ys• Boys improved their po4ition in the standings somewhat as they grabbed five points off the Tail Ends to increase their season total to 19. Heinz Sartori was the sparkplug with a 313 single and 735 triple. The Tail Ends got a 211 single from Doug Zoethout and 521 triple from Bill Hyde for their two points. The winners are Jim Young of Brookside and Cindy Smith of Robertson in the senior division, Glenn Raynard of Brookside and Hensall man top canoeist Rene Boogemans of Hensall has won the Ontario Canoe Racing Association trophy for the second con- secutive year. He par- ticipated in 26 races this year and outpointed 120 other members throughout the province.
