Larty, metallurgical engineer at Gearco, is
ble for much of the quality control of the gears the
firm produces for Champion Road Machinery
road graders. Here McLarty checks over the
panel on one of the furnaces that heat treats the
gears in preparation for their installation into a tran-
smission or rear end. The panel controls the heat process as
well as records information pertinent to the operation.

to make Sure that
the steel received is the steel
that was ordered. He then
takes a sample slug of the
steel leaving the rest of it to -
be cut into—gears.- The slug
then goes ---into the heat
treating ovens with the
finished gears so that Jim can
simply check the slug for
quality, knowing that his
findings on the slug will
match the gears it was
treated with.
About 1,500 pounds of steel
gears are cut and assembled
by the carburizing furnaces.
The furnaces heat the metal
gears to 930 degrees Celsius
(1,700 F) and a carburizing
process completed to
strengthen them.
The furnaces are com-
pletely automatic. The gears
are placed in the ovens and
take about two hours to heat
up to the required tem-
perature. The atmosphere in
the ovens is controlled and
made carbon dioxide rich by
removing oxygen and adding
natural gas. The enriching
begins a chemical reaction
between the carbon dioxide
..,,and..,the steel and carbon is
deposited on the surface of
the gear and diffuses into the
steel.
After seven hours at the
extreme heat the carbon has
penetrated in sufficient
quantity to give an effective
case depth of between 40' to 50
one thousandths of an inch.
The gears are then cooled to
845 degrees Celsius (1,550 F)
for two hours. They are
dropped into an oil quench
that cools the steel down to
about 150 degrees F in a
matter of minutes.
The cooling causes a
structural change in the steel
and to prevent weakness the
steel is then tempered to
relieve stress. ,The parts are
then removed from the ovens
and Jim checks them to make
sure everything went right.
The tools of his trade are a
machine to check hardness
and a microscope. The
hardness machine simply
applies pressure through a
diamond head onto the sur-
face of the steel. The ultimate
stress of the Gearco parts is
approximately 300,000 pounds
per square inch. The core of
the slug is then checked to
make sure that the core of the
gear is in good shape. If the
K. PECK APPLIANCES
core is too soft the gear will
bend under stress, if it is too
hard it will break.
The core is checked under a
microscope - that - magnifies
the -steel sample—anywhere
from 50 times to 1,600 times.
To the layman staring at the
centre of the magnified steel
core it appears as fresh
snowflakes h""t. to Jim's ex-
pert eye it tells whether or not
the gear will do its job.
The quality checks have
proven worthwhile. Jim says
that he gets .very few gears
back to his office. He says
some damaged • gears are
brought in to he checked but
almost always the problem is
not the strength of the gear
but excessive abuse of the
grader by .its operator. He
adds that many of the
problems with machines are
human.
Jim says that many times
when a problem can't be
pinpointed it is blamed on
faulty material but more
often than not the problem is
due to assembly problems or
poor . alignment causing
uncalled for stress on the
materials.

Each batch of gears that is heat treated at Gearco is accompanied by a slug of metal to
enable metallurgical engineer Jim McLarty to quality check each processing. He checks
the slug for carburizing case depth, structure and hardness related to stress and here
checks the depth of the carburizing using a Brinell scope that magnifies the slug 20 times.
He estimates he collects about 600 of the slugs during the course of a year. (staff -photo)

As a regular summer visitor

I asked him to show me a

Will you clarify this

There was a local bylaw

agree, that to enforce this law,

Recently a friend of a friend
of mine took an overdose of
pills and I'm glad to say that
he was fortunate enough to
have his 'stomach pumped in
time, so consequently his life
was saved.
So far he has not been
charged with anything, I've
told him he will be, but he
says, "I'm crazy."
Can you tell me who is right,
please.
Up until 1972 you would have
been quite right in your
assumption, but that was the
year that it was abolished in
Canada by Parliament.
Up until then it was usually
punishable by up to six months
in prison, or a 1500 fine, but as
we have stated, this is no
longer the case'
