The weather was unco- operative on Monday sInd the third day of the meet find to be cancelled due to low-lying cloud cover. The cancellation was a big disappointment to about 500 parachutists from ail over Canada and the eastern United States. Skydiver Mike Beke of Windsor was one of the disappointed skydivers. He said, % "This is one of the biggest meets we've had in Canada. Why did this have to happen?" The skydivers had planned to set a new world record by forming a star of 60 jumpers and .progr.a.m organizers had hoped Monday would be the day that this and other such daring aerial feats would be performed. Beke was sure the 60 -man -hook-up could have been achieved, given the conditions at Goderich and the number of expert skydivers the meet attracted. A 29 -member maple leaf configuration on Sunday had already set a Canadian record. This feat was held •J GODERICH SIGNAL STAR THLIRSDAYr'SEPTEMB .ij from 8,000 to 4,500 feet while it was recorded on file. Program . director Trace Whalen of Goderich decided to cancel Monday's event about 11 a.m. when the weather wouldn't clear up but he said the meet was so successful that it could become an annual event in Goderich. The meet attracted nearly 2,000 spectators' cars. The event was sponsored by the Goderich Old-timers Hockey team as part of the Jubilee 3 celebrations. Injuries recorded during the meet were one sprained ankle and a dislocated shoulder. On -e" T ump-er's—eh-at-e--- opened prematurely at 12,000 feet and he drifted downwind about six miles to Benmiller. Two other jumpers had just the opposite problem when their chutes didn't open until they were at about 500 feet. Another jumper landed on the beach at Lake Huron narrowly missing the water. And at least' 50 other divers landed in various parts of town. Shelly Fisher, given the title of best, ticket seller amongst tournament organizers, drew Carman Fielder's name from the drum Monday night winning Fielder a gas barbecue. The draw wad sponsored by the Labor Day Fastball tournament and the young Fisher salesgirl hustled tickets all weekend long at the ball park to make the draw the success it was hoped to be. Overseeing the draw is tournament chairman Gerry Durst.
