KILLER Babes In Arms is playing this week and next week at Huron _Country Playhouse. For anyone who enjoys. a night out, far from normal routine, lost in the world of music and show biz, Babes In Arms is a great en- tertainment bargain. . The magic , of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart makes this musical -comedy enjoyable. Songs like I Wish I Were in Love Again, My •Funny Valentine, The Lady Is A Tramp afid Johnny One - Note make the production memorable and leave people humming their favorites as they make their wLy homeward. Shari Bondy as Susie Ward gets an,A for, enthusiasm. She bubbles and sparkles, all over the place as the would-be actress who is losing her boyfriend. to a successful established star, Jennifer Owen • played by Elise Dewsberry. Bondy isn't a singer ,of ballads and love songs and her offering of My Funny), Valentine tends to grate a little. But the audience can easily overlook this shortcomihg because Bondy's strong performance as a dancer and as an actress earn favor frotn the start. Dewsberry, one of the most talented singers in the cast, is properly sophisticated as the ".tar" who arrives at The Surf and Sand Playhouse to play in a show which is doomed for failure because of a poor script. The playwright is Lee Calhoun, ably por- trayed by Alden Jones who is superb during the scene where everything that can go wrong goes wrong with his on- stage appearance in his own play. Vickie Van Dyke drew the greatest audience applause on opening night. That wasn't surprising because Van Dyke out -shone practically everyone on stage/ with her ESTATE 1.0 11• AM& • II UK LIST 0 performance as Bunny Byron, part owner of The Surf • and Sand Playhouse. Van Dyke's rendition of Way Out West On West 'End Avenue, was excellent. She was a show -stopper as she belted, out Johnny One -Note. Mark Russell as Gus Field showed remarkable flair as a singer, as a dancer and as an actor. Rick Zimmerman as Valentine White, the object of a tug of war between Susie and Jennifer was too weak for the musical talent of Dewsberry (Jennifer) and the vitality of Bondy (Susie). The general impression of the show was good, though. All of the chorus numbers were great, most particularly the title number Babes In Arms and the closing ex- travaganza, Johnny One - Note. Choreographer Joel Greenberg had the entire cast moving, alive, in tune and in time. The play is directed by James Murphy of the Huron Country Playhouse, The pit orchestra, sometimes a little • over -powering for -the weaker singers caught too far back on the stage, was directed by Peter Purvis. George Washington Slept Here opens Augu'st 9 and See How They Run premiers August 16. The Playhouse season ends with a repeat of the season's most successful comedy, still unannounced. • Phoner 524-6384 gr ndit en. BAILEY• ij • v Looking for a place to call home? Look no further!
