(staff photo) Vernon Chapman and Ron Baker are excellent as Walter's nosy next door neighbours. They are small time farmers and gossips who feed off the excitement and scandals of other people's lives to compensate for . the dullness of their own existence. As the play's narrators, Archie and Jake are hilarious and often have the audience rolling in the aisles. Although Artichoke is billed as a drama of life in a small prairie_ town.. which progress has passed by, it is much more than that. Author Joanna Glass has added the themes- of lost love and passion 'and the stuff of life itself. Glass shows amazing insight into life and emotion. She combines light-hearted moments with the darker side , of things. The play's set is very detailed and authentic. The stage is transformed into an old prairie farm kitchen noticeably containing few of the luxuries of modern technology. Director Sean Gillespie can be credited with leading his cast in •one of the finest performances around. ' The high quality of this play cannot be emphasized enough: There is almost a built-in guarantee that any audience viewing the production will enjoy it. Unfortunately the audience present on Artichoke's opening night last Wednesday was small. There are three nights left to catch this play which runs until Saturday.
