' I didn't get to see the 'A' or 'B' games two weeks ago, but I can at least give you the scores. The 'B' game against St. Columban was a loss; 3 - 0. The 'A' game against the London Lions was a winner by a sharp 4 - 1. The goals being shared two apiece by "The Big H", Harold Ref- flinghaus and one of our "rookie" members, Lee Arbour. Now, I must tell you a little bit about Lee; he's fast becoming quite theac- complished soccer player and he's a definite asset to the team. One very noticeable trait tbat you can easily and swiftly identify him by on the field is the unique way he runs. His legs are in constant motidn, even if the rest of him isn't!! The bottom half of him is always a blur, he travels that quickly... quite reminiscent of the Roadrunner; and so I've decided to dub him ;a x eep . up! And, as I've said, , the Beep jl ! We lost this one in the last 30 seconds (yes... believe it), both Cup games los; in the last minute!) and it'was the only goal of the entire game.., tnat's what a hard-fought match it turned out to be! United played defensive soccer to Oakridge's of- fensive overtures and it was a constant grind from begin- ning to end. Mind you, Goderich tried mighty, hard to produce key plays to their advantage in a bid to trigger the balance and gain United some territory and maneuvering space. Uh-Uh! Oakridge wasn't havin' any:.. we couldn't charm them or, harm them! They were slick and solid... their defense line wasn't sloppy and the offense, although skilled, were lacking in•subtlety and that's where United maintained the garne's stalemate. were both Cup Games, not regular League games; and thank goodness 'cause we lost 'em both! The 'B' team played on Saturday against the Yugoslays for the 3rd Division Cup and the score - was a close 4-3. The op- position scored in the last minute to break a tie game (the dirty dogs!) But the United guys, I hear, played a tight, unified game and held up their territory with dogged. persistence. In the first half, the Yugoslays were leading 3-1 and Goderich's only goal was Scored by "Ready Jeddy" De Jbng. During the second half, United kept a good grip on the action and whipped in two additional goals to tie up•the play. Bowlers nip builders 2-1 Little Bowl grabbed two runs in the top of the first inning and John Crawford came on to pitch four shutout innings and preserve.a 2-1 win over Fisher Builders in Industrial League action recently. The Builders managed one run off Bowler starter Mark Dauphin but Crawford held on for the win. Charlie Crawford started the game off with a single and scored when Glen Falkiner" drilled a one out double. Bill Black singled to score Faikiner and the winning run before Fred Pellow could end the rally. 'Denis LeBrun got the Builders back in the game when he led off the second with a walk'. A pass ball moved him to second and an error on John Hoy's .shit allowed him to score. The game turned into a classic pitching struggle across the final five innings. Dauphin got the Builders one, two three in the third FARM By AIR_ • inning and Crawford came on in relief and pitched a four hitter across the final four innings for the • win. The Builders left a man on base in the fourth and sixth innings. Our offense, unlike` the opposition, is strongly subtle and broke through their zone time and again to repeatedly take shots on the goal to no avail. It wasn't for lack of trying that we didn't score or that the Goalie was that terrific.,: it was just the fact that United's shots were too busy "kissing" the goalposts and crossbar to land in the net! We would've settled for a little less'touchiness" and a bit more "touchdown" (football is football!) But after the second" half ground agonizingly and slowly by, second by second, and . still we weren't suc- ceeding in breaking the scoreless tie, the teats became ragged and fatigued. • The ball began to be "booted" Pellow . bore down and Pr pitched six` innings of shutout ball giving up just five hits. He fanned Rob Snell in the sixth when he got behind and , left two men on base with -one out. The out was Dave Pat- terson who also fanned. Pellow sent seven Bowlers back to the bench. 3' Airplanes with Experienced Pilots Available For Service n Russeldale area: Chemical Supplied by: Thames Volley Produce Phone: 229-8950 Day c r 229-6575 Evenings In Seaforth area: Chemical Suppliedby: 11, e• Milton J. "The Sly Fox" goes to Mike Klijn who was at his best makings and shaping the plays. Hooray! for the "Flying Dutchman"! A "Foxy Special" for Larry Donnelly "the Bronze Body" who is one sharp defenseman and keeps a cool head under fire. Also, a "Foxy Special" for Pete Teichert. "The Shadow" has real substance out there during his play. He hits 'em hard but quiet! And now it's time for another "Rowdy Rooter" award... you know the one for the fan with the loudest mouth? Well, this fan not only had the loudest, but the longest -running commentary on record! Talk about your non-stop dialogue! And it was one of our very own players (they're the worst kind!) -... injured, of course, from a previous game. (I wonder why??) Congratulations, Tony "full of baloney" Mennen!!
