At first sight, it laoks ,like a wishful thinking. Most of us I remember the old grind; spending a great deal of our school life trying to cram enough science or history into our heads in order to obtain a pass mark on the final examinations. And for what purpose? We wanted to be promoted to the next grade, didn't we? And we just had to pass out of public school or get that all-important matriculation certificate. And if we didn't pass, we had to repeat a year -, and that was.pretty dull. Many of us simply failed to achieve that certificate. And ' then, whenever we applied for a job and were asked what final grade we passed, we had to admit we almost finished grade twelve or whatever it was we almost completed or else we tried to pretend we had more educational grandchildren. qualifications'than we really The late Mrs. Emery rested at the T. • Brady Hinnegan Funeral Home in Chatham until Saturday when funeral mass was held in St. Philip's Church in Grande Pointe at 11 a.m. Prayers were offered on Friday. It didn't look very well when the employer checked with the school and found the true details. How 'much better not to have examinations at all. But then, what will the incentives be? Of course you didn't. You promptly forgo Most of it and what you haven't forgotten you have remembered because you ' wdre •gtiffididntirthierested In' fact, you have probably remembered the things you didn't have to prepare just for the examination. You knew them already and they have stayed with you. They are the things that have really counted in your education. Besides that you have learned a lot of other things that were never tested on an examination, such as, how to get along with other people, how to pay attention or concentrate, how to express ideas, in brief, how to think. Otherwise you learned only one thing, how to pass examinations. That may be a useful art supposing you have to keep on passing them. Jesus didn't tell us that we had to obtain a pass mark, He didn't say, "Obtain fifty or sixty percent, and I'll let you into the Kingdom of God". He really did say, "Be ye per- fect" .and that's quite another thing. The, incentive is to be more like Christ, an objective sufficiently worthy in itself, and satisfying to everyone. Many dit our greatest men were not particularly good at passing examinations - there s nothing to indicate that Jesus was. But in the tests of ife they stood up well.
