BY RONNIE VARGA Good day to ya, fans! I'm fit to be tied and so_was the 'A' team last Sunday! We tied our game with Clinton, 14 and although it's better than losing, it was still a wipe-out from the start to finish! Better news on the 'B' side of the coin! Walter's team got a 1-0 shut out against Oakridge under their belts F GET YOUR FRIENDS TOGETHER FOR THE GALA WIND UP DANCE FOR JUBILEE THREE omecomimg BALLAnd Alumni GODERICH ARENA SATURDAY, JULY 9 DANCING 9 - 1 A.M. So, the weekend was full of action and charged with plenty of frustration, elation and rehabilitation! I'll report primarily about the 'A' game as that's the one I attended. (the oldest 'groupie' knownto modern man!) The very first moment we all set eyes on the referee, we knew thiswas going to be "one of those days" ! ! And it was ... in spades!! Goderich's line-up- is still not up to par and unfortunately it came through, loud and clear for this particular match. We really should have been able to walk all over Clinton, we're a far superior team, but it sure wasn't in evidence. Who knows why one team will bring out the best qualities and another make you completely blow them?? During the first 45 minutes we had numerous scoring opportunities.. We must have out -shot them 5-1, but each time the Clinton goalie succeeded in deflecting the ball or United would just barely glance it off the goalposts or crossbar. What a drag! It was terribly frustrating and only served to Police Repast The Goderich police department reported four minor accidents in town during the past week. Also during the last two weeks the department laid six charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, 15 under the Liquor Licence Act. 41 under the Highway Traffic Act, 13 under the Juvenile Delinquent Act and one un- der the Motorized Vehicle Accident Claims Act. • ar Pian to attend the night that suits you bens Plan to attend both nights! 6 Tickets - s6.o6 Per Person Available at..,. ' The guys worked doggedly for the most part, but at times seemed unsure and slightly sluggish (not enough bran maybe ?) Clinton was bearing down pretty hard on us and repeatedly threw' out challenges which were met but not overtaken,. United vainly tried for some ef- fective plays but seemed destined to produce fatal results. This period of play finally ended and a scoreless tie was aIL'both teams had to show for their sweat and strain. When the second half got underway, the team seemed more determined, but in actuality they became less confident and more ineffective. I can't tell whether it was the op- position's constant hassling and', hacking or simply 'bad vibes,' but United couldn't gain ground or control the play to their advantage. They worked diligently for the most part, although at times they didn't dig as toughly and as thoroughly as they might. Towards the mid -point of this half, a beautiful op- portunity was taken and put into effect; a well -executed pass from Mike Klijn over to Harold Refflinghaus who whipped it over to Brian Allen. Ole 'Boogie Boots' just snapped 'er in, quick as ya please and the first goal of the game was United's. That was the best triple play, I've seen for awhile. (but who listens to me?'?) Well, of course this spurred Clinton on to greater efforts and eventually it paid off and they_evened up the play with a goal of their own. Goderich tried desperately to handle the remaining minutes with accuracy and acumen, but in this they fell short and the game came to its conclusion. Clinton was every bit as disappointed and disgusted with themselves as we were with ourselves. They figured they could 'cream' us and we were certain we could whip them. (and we all know one of us should have done it and the nitialss' are Goderich United!!) •. -The besE 'Min' field or this game was most Brian Allen. He nit my is Player -of -the -day, b icks up the Sly Fox award as well for goodmeasure! It was delight to observe Brian's well-timed nianeuvers. He illed the ball with the ease of pro (such violence!) and ontrolled each of his plays ith "panache" (that means e was real groovy!) and he eacted to all challenges with uick defensive moves. He as fast, enduring and remained coolly confident hroughout the action. In fact, e was a triple threat player. Boogie Boots," youand your oots oughta be bronzed!! good man on the eld was Mike Klijn who was ports man -of -the -game, ike was quietly effective, ways reassuring and super- eady. He took a lot of acking but retained his uanimity, which can be the st of a true sportsman. Next me is gonna be ours, guys no sharing the points! (I'm 'fish!)
