Election waste of
time says Smith
An Ontario election is not
needed at this time and would
result in the needless waste of
s15 to $20 million of public
funds, Liberal Party leader
Stuart Smith told members of
the Huron -Middlesex Liberal
Association in Exeter Legion
Hall on April 27.
The only reason Premier
Davis is looking for an excuse
for an election is because he
is being guided by favorable
polls in his desire to get out
from under the restraints of
minority government, said
Smith. .
"Premier Davis is not
thinking of the good of
Ontario. We are elected to get
a job done, not to play
politics. It is our job to make
minority government work
and it is working," he said.
Emphasizing that the
Liberals were ready for an
election if Mr. Davis brought
it on, Smith said an election
would be easier than to
continue sitting with all the
concerns and compromises
which a minority situation
entails.
Mr.: Smith also went on to
speak of free enterprise. He'
stressed the concern the
Liberal party had for free
enterprise and said the party
was dedicated to a free en-
terprise style of farming to
ensure a future for the young.
He referred to the im-
provements in the farm
stabilization bill which had
resulted from Liberal
amendments and paid tribute
to the role that Huron Mid-
dlesex member Jack Riddell
had had in pressing the issue
on behalf of Ontario farmers.
D.J. Murphy Q.C.,
Gnderich, in thanking Mr.
Smith at the end ' of his
speech, reminded him that
the riding . had fooled the
Tories in the byelection when
Jack Riddelll was elected and
would do it again.
Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw
paid tribute to Mr. Smith and
Jack Riddell for their coni
tribution, to the democratic
process and in making
minority government work,
. The election of officers for
the Huron Middlesex Liberal
Association was carried out
by A.Y. McLean of Seaforth,
Mr. Ian McAllister of
Hensall was returned as
president. Other positions.
