Dunlop's Tomb
area cleaned
up for spring
Raymond Scotchmer, curator of the Goderich museum, cuts down one of the dead trees in
the Tiger Dunlop tomb area. The museum maintenance crew works under the property
committee of Huron County council and is cleaning up the area in conjunction with Jubilee
3.
Spring clean up is underway in the
area surrounding Tiger Dunlop's tomb
north of Goderich.
Leroy Erb and Russel Pfrimmer of the
Goderich museum maintenance crew,
are busy pulling out weeds, cutting down
dead trees, mowing the grass, and
repairing some of the 124 rickety wooden
steps leading up to the tomb.
Museum curator,_ Raymond Scot-
chmer says the wooden steps will have to
be replaced with steel ones in another
few years.
The Goderich museum operates under
the property committee of Huron County
Council. Clean up at Tiger Dunlop's
tomb is carried out on a regular basis
through this county department,
The .Signal Star recently received a
letter from an interested visitor to the
tomb, suggesting the area be cleaned up
in conjunction with Jubilee 3
celebrations.

away from Parisian French
which is studied in university
by the language majors.
Trustee Shirley Hazlitt
questioned the benefits of
starting French at,the grade
one level. Trustee Bob Allan
.replied that the ministry had
done a fair amount of
research on this and had no
definite conclusions.
However it was felt that more
important than the age, the
.students should be taught a
certain amount of French. •
Presently a student taking
20 minutes of French a day
would accumulate 360 hours
by the end of grade eight and
a high school student would
accumulate 920 hours by the
'end of grade thirteen.
However, the Ministry of
Education sets the basic level
of actievement at 1,200 hours,
the middle level achievable
through 2100 hours and the
top level through 5,000 hours
of instruction.

Goderich recreation
director Mike Dymond in-
troduced a policy proposal to
the Goderich Recreation and
Community Centre Board to
clarify concerns in Parks and
Recreation jurisdiction as
well •as their combined ef-
forts.
Goderich town councillor,
Elsa Haydon, brought the
jutisdictional matter before
the board at their April
meeting. Dymond outlined
the specific concerns in
planning and development,
utilization and scheduling of
areas and finances.
Dymond'' proposals called
for the recreation board to

aspects ofplanning and
development call designated
park properties in Goderich.
The second proposal stated
that all parks within the town
of Goderich be available to
the Recreation board for
programming use and that
the cost would be the
responsibility of the
recreation board.
The Recreation board also
took the responsibility for the
purchase and installation of
playground equipment on
designated park properties.
In other board business,
Jane Netzke, coordinator of
the integration program for.
the mentally retarded,
reported that she may obtain
funds up to $7,000 from Young
Canada Works and the
Secretary of State for a
summer integrated
playground program.
The program would mean
the hiring of six or seven staff
personnel for the seven week
program. A Leader in
Training course will be of-
fered as a component of the
program, for young students
in the 14-16 year age group.
Interested students will be
exposed to general leadership
and mental retardation
training and expected to work
on a volunteer basis for a two
week period. If interest is
shown in the Clinton-
Vanastra area then children
will be transported daily for
the playground program.
