Board seeks grants for tennis
By Shelley McPhee
Clinton's Recreation
Committee will be taking
-Over seeking grants for the
proposed tennis courts to be
situated at Central Huron
Secondary School.
The Huron County Board of
Education relieved them-
selves of all construction
costs either for initial in-
struction or for any future
additions at their regular
meeting in Clinton on May2.
Since the board was
volved in the project, Win-
tario and Community Centres
Art grants would have'been
lessened, but with the
recreation committee of the
town now in charge, the
tennis court project will be
able to receive higher grants
and the objective will' be
reached.
Tom Fox, staff advisor for
the student's council and
history department head at
CHSS, reported to the board
that $10,000 had been raised
by the students and more is
being hoped for. 'Another
$5,000 will come from the
Community Centres Act,
while Wintario will pay the
remainder of the $19,000 cost
of the two courts.
Included in the recom-
mendations suggested, the
board will share the cost of
upkeep and maintenance with
school in thenorthwest
corner between the parking
lot and sports field.

approved by the board in

of the trips being overnight

Committee
wants West
Street site
The Housing Action
Committee is standing united
behind a decision to build
senior citizen housing within
the core area (West Street)
rather than away from the
core area (Bennett Street).
At a special meetkng on
April 29 the committee
passed a three-part motion
concerning the site for the
housing plans.
The committee is
requesting that Sidney Kay of
the Ontario Housing Cor-
poration (OHC) attend a
meeting on May 4 with the
Housing Action Committee.
He will be required to bring
M. Nestor, an OHC architect,
with him and have in-
formation at that time on site
selection, a feasibility study,
conceptual site plans and
CMI -IC requirements for
senior citizen housing.
The committee will advise
Kay at this time of their
opinion that the core site is
the best site for senior citizen
housing. They will also
recommend to council that
the purchase of this site be
subsidized if necessary.
The committee is hoping to„
work with an architect ap-
pointed by the OHC to
prepare proposals suitable to
the core area site.
The OHC employees
working on the site and plans
for the senior citizen housing
in Goderich have been en-
couraging the highway site on
Bennett Str-eet over the core
site on West Street because of
its lower cost advantages.
Roman Dzus,' Goderich
town planner and member of
the HousingAction Com
mittee says,_ "OHC just came
in and presented their own
plans. So far they've been
calling all the shots.."
Don Wheeler, a member of
the ,committee says, • "On
theiown they (OHC) went
off and selected two sites and
pushed the one they wanted.
OHC is not being totally fair
to us. Where this was sup-
posed to be a co-operative
venture, it has become a
unilateral one.' '
. Mayor Deb Shewfelt'say5',
l'We need a package showing
OHC what we propose. We
have to say this is where it
(senior citizen- housing)
should be and this is where
we're going to put it."
t
-Shewtelt says he thinks
OHC is giving the committee
a "snow job.
Dzus passed around a
report showing the im-
portance of access to the
downtown area to the well
being of senior citizens.
While all members of the
Housing Action Committee
agreed that they need another
site feasibility plan, Coun
cillor Bob Allen said he fears
the' committee may be
"putting up too many road
blocks."
"We're starting to look in
the paper like we don't want
housing. We don't want to tie
up this project," said Allen.
Mayor Shewfelt says
anything OHC does will take
at least two years.
