Prices and Trade Board .
The organization was formed. in the beginning, to help

.t paid nienl'foership of 100 000 and 70 pieces of consumer leg-
islation tar which it can take the major credits
11's the Consumers Association of Canada
This corner- has nut endeared itself to the ('A(' or some of
its more vocal members because. over the Years. this writer
has felt the ('A(' did nut do its homework and went off half -
(licked at the v rang trine
But the winds ut change' are noticeable Barbara Shand,
president of the Ontario branch of the association. told a
meeting ,if the Guelph branch recently that the organization
h,s,.,
t rhed to me -lode prridlie'er•s as well.
-You can't sepir rte the consumer from the producer,"
she seitd "because ausc the consumer is also the producer and we
are going to get whit we think the consumer.should have."
It was retreshing to road what 'firs Shand said about egg
inarketing Hens she told the annual meeting, don't just lay
(,ride :1 large eggs They 1 ray medium and extra large, too,
I know a lot ut farmers who have a great rapport with
their livestock but. even with modern genetics and technolo-
gy, I know of nu farmer who is able to talk his hens into lav-
ing just the right size eggs for the marketplace. Perhaps Don
Shover and his experts in Galt can do something about it.
They have produced hens which can survive in any country in
the world
Getting back to the consumers. issuciation, the Ontario
president said the current trend to use eggs as loss leaders
can and has •- upset the entire national egg marketing
scht'nrc If the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency can't get
enough large eggs from the producers to meet the demands
from thus huge tuod chains within 48 hours, then a permit:
must he issued allowing importation of enough eggs to fill
the demand'
leer,+e,r auua arra 0, But, Lutie, Eraalr Ra Elm,a Om 6438 2C7
'So, while the big chain stores import large eggs, the
medium and extra large eggs from Canadian producers go
into the breaker industry
Although the consumers association has taken a stand
against provincial piovernmient feelers to ban loss -leader
advertising, Mrs Shand certamly`r'ealizes how these impor-
tations of huge supplies of large eggs cap upset the carefully
worked out plans of Canadian producers
It is refreshing to read that a consumer representative
understands the problems of marketing and of producers.
Too marry times. the ('A(' and the farmers have been con-
fronting each other with half•baked statements and half -
done research by both sides
I don't know boakyou but I'm sick. sore and tired of these
confrontations It's .about time both sides began to under-
stand each other fly the tune of Mrs. Shand's talk it seems
that they are finally un the right path.
I'm not un the mailing list for consumers association bol•
letins'perhaps because the organization has had no reason
to show
e me any affection. Or perhaps because I'm not a
nle.rnber. Ilowe‘er•, a recent newsletter in the Kitchener -
Waterloo area had some sound advice to cornbat`high prices,
The .answer is right in the pockets and purses of consu-
mers: their dollars
Don't buy the product if the price has skyrocketed.
If you, the consumer. don't buy•the product, the manufac-
turer will have to examine the situation, said the. newsletter.
Be assured, the price will come down if it is possible. Your
buying dollar is powerful if used wisely.
When the -price ut sugar rose and people cut back on buying
it or switched to other products.. the price dropped. It seems
to me the sugar companies must have a strong lobby in
Ottawa. Or is it just coincidence that saccharin has been
banned`.' '
If you are angry at the price of coffee. quit buying it
You've got the hest weapon in the world: money.

The 1978 International
Plowing Match will be held in
Huron County (just east of
Wingham) on Sept. 26 to 30
only 17 months from now.
Much of the necessary
planning undertaken by the
various local committees is
well in hand, However, an
important contest to run in
conjunction with the match is
of }nthr est to many farm and
home -owners as well.
The Farmstead and. Home

will provide a guide to par-
ticipation in the competition:
The first step in improving
farmsteads and dwellings is a
general clean-up. Dismantle

The cooler and more
variable weather conditions
predicted for the remainder
of this decade may affect the,
agricultural scene in Ontario.
Dr., T,J. Gillespie,
meteorologist at the Ontario
Agricultural College, Guelph,
says farmers may have to
reassess farming strategies
to adapt to the slightly cooler
temperatures in the long-
range forecast. -
"Based on the evidence
available, we are predicting
more variation in heat units
and rainfall from year to year
than we`have had in the past
decade," says Dr. Gillespie.
What this means to farmers is
that the growing season in
future years may he a bit
shorter than )current con-
ditions.
Examples of possible
planning strategies to deal
with the changes are:
planting a corn hybrid which
requires less heat units than
normally recommended or
shifting acreage to a different
type of crop.
"In the southwest part of
the province. farmers could
consider planting a shorter-
season
horterseason corn hybrid which
requires 100 to 200 Tess heat
units than the rated number
for that climatic zona,- says
Dr. Gillespie,
