The Goderich Industrial
Commission extended an
option do a piece of land in
Industrial Park for another
year in 'a move Monday
designed to have the land
used for an office building
rather than a manufacturing
site, The option is held by the
Dominion Road Machinery
Company and the five -acre
parcel of land fronts on
Hayfield Road and is Just
south of the vacant Textral
plant,
The commission did not
renew the company's five
year option but merely
recommended to council that
the option he extended one
year, The present option is for
'N2,000 an acre and the new
rate set by the town is $5,000
per acre.
Harry Worsell recom-
mended that the company be
given the additional 12
months hut be notified that at
the end of that time the cost
per acre will he raised. He
said when he made the
motion that the option be
extended to permit con-
struction of an office building
but did not include that
stipulation.,n the motion,
John Mckeown, corporate
group vice president at.
DRMCo told the commission
in a 'letter that his firm had
every intention of using the
land and had plans to built
f
offices on it. He added,
however, that other ex-
pansion plats forced the firm
to delay the office building
explaining that if the firm had
to build on the 'land this year
to exercise its option. i'twould
.
build a parts plant on the'
land.
The firm announced that it
intends to let a contract soon
on a new' 25,000 square foot
plant in the Industrial Park to
be built this summer. The
new plant is to be built on
Huckins Street, directly" east
of the Gearco Plant. Mr.
McKeown suggestea tnat the
parts building could be built
on the five acre parcel on
Hayfield Road to ensure the
firm's option is secure.
Commission Chairman
Gord McManus said he would
prefer an office building on
the highway entrance to
Goderich rather than a
manufacturing -type building.
He added that he felt it
behooved thio commission to
encourage local industry to
expand and at the same time
protect the interest of the
town.
Councillor Dave Gower, an
employee of DRMCo, said he
didn't know if his job gave
him a conflict of interest hot
added that he wild like to
comment from the town's
point of view, He•said that the
