Clinton, along with hospitals in Durham, Chesley, and Doctor's Hospital in Toronto will not be closed by the government after all, following a year- long struggle by the hospitals to stay open. The four hospitals had been ordered to close in February of 1976, but through a series of court battles, have all remained open. Former Health Minister Frank Miller had visited Clinton in February 1976 and ordered the hospital closed, but a . strong protest was mounted by the community and a court battle ensued with the Divisional Court of Ontario ruling last May that the government couldn't legally close hospitals with order council, The government has since appealed the decision and another hearing with •the Supreme Court is scheduled to start this coming May 2.. Mr. Timbrell said that even though the hospitals won't be closed, the gover- nment still intends to proceed witl3 the court battle to win the right to close hospitals, if • they wish. The announced reprieve was made in the legislature, but Mr. Trimbrell said the ministry would be conducting bed studies in Huron and Perth Counties, so local of: ficials aren't sure they're completely off the hook yet, Reaction in Clinton Wed- nesday morning to the an- nouncement was one of pleasure and happiness. Beecher Menzies, chair- man of the Clinton Public Hospital board, said he was "very pleased and exhilarated to receive the news". "I'm sure, the reaction of the community (to the Home Hunting? Douglas Coventry, Clinton hospital administrator, said he suspected for a long time that the government was trying to back down, especially when they removed Frank Miller from the ministry. "The staff is very op- timistic," Coventry said, "although morale hasn't really been a problem." At a press conference in Toronto, Health Minister Timbrellconfirmed Coventry's suspicions when he said: "There are not now, nor have there been any orders issued by me (for closings) hanging over those "hospitals." Clinton Mayor Harold Lobb said he was "very pleased that they (the government) have changed their minds." "I think the bad winter maybe had something to do with it," Lobb said. "I•don't think they'll bother us again unless we get out of line (o'n operating ex- penses)," Lobb added. "We went along with them and cut our, expenses," he said. Timbrell sat; the gover- nment would continue to pursue the court case on _ hospital closings "to settle the questions of principle concerning the ability of the ministry to close facilities it cannot finance." Once in a Life T me Government statistics indicate that belt -wearing decreased substantially during the latter part of 1976. Why should a driver who hasn't had an accident in 20 years be bothered with safety belts? That's a good question. Here's a good answer from the Ontario Safety League. Four out of five drivers in accidents never had an ac- cident before. What hasn't happened in 20 years can happen in two seconds. No driver leads a charmed life, says the League. The owners obligation All car owners bear the legal and moral obligation to be sure their vehicles are maintained in a mechanically safe condition, The Ontario Safety League notes that this won't eliminate all accidents but it will reduce them. With rough Winter,, driving giving way to Spring, this is an obligation no sensible driver will shirk. the Exeter paper, as president and Howard Aitken, general manager of the Clinton News -Record, as secr. t ry-treasurer.
