not,. teachers are not aware of
this sort of long-term in-
fluence. Usually, it is years.
later that we -recognize it, and
we never get a chance to tell
them how much we ap-
preciated theft mirk. their
attention, their love even
their anger.
Perhaps during Education
Week. your readers would be
happy to • recall their
memories of teachers who
have, in some smalli or large
way, contributed to their
lives,
One way to do this would he
to run a series of anecdotal
reminiscences of 'celebrated'
.citizens of your com-
munity„..people whose lives
have illustrated a continuing,
and recognized contribution
in your area. Another way
would he to run a feature
page of photographs,
qUotations and memories of
these people, as they recall
'special teachers. Obviously.
there are many ways it could
he done effectively.
Likely you have your own
plans made for Education

times when county coim-
cillors appear to do little
more than hamper an
otherwise • efficient and
business -like operation."
There is no intention here to
suggest that county cjiuncil is
ineffective. but there is every
jiistification to wonder
whether Huron County
Cou.ncil is indeed as
productive or as progressive
as some of its members would
like to believe.
Certainly the county
system has -its advantages •
such as the fact that every
single county budget is
„brought forward in some
detail for stUdy, and appro N, al
by all members of the
touncil. This is definitely a.
far cry from the county
school hoard system where it
is doubtful if trustees other
than those directly involved
on the budget committee.
have any conception of the
details behind . the N-arious
headings in the budget. or
whether or not the costs
represented there are low,
high or average in relation to
the needs of the Schools in the
county. (Ther(.' is alsosome
reason to doubt, by the way,
that even those trustees .on
the borkd's budget committee
are •fully aware of all the
ramifications of the budget's
.items,)
But. it would he worthwhile,
perhaps. if county councillors
could stand hack fromtheir
county positions and take an
honest and unbiased look at
themselves. Where does ,the
county's strength lie'? Where
are its weaknesses.? How
could the public he served
better:, What must county
council do to safeguard, the.
Voeal - right to make more
decisions right hereat home?
To move towards, the UC-
ceptance' of greater and
greater responsibility?

Week to serve the needs of
your community, Should you
consider using this idea, we
are in no way looking for any
credit. OTE's 'community'
consists of the 103,000

are our members, and we
thought a good idea is worth

Dear Editor, "hog waSh • — the really
The article on the proposed enthusiastic gardeners will

last week's Signal prompts I do hOpe the seniors will air
this letter, their feelings to Council and
the •Committee, Unfor-
tunately many of the ones
who will he using the'facilities
aren't the type to make
demands and are part of the
silent majority. However.
they do have votes.
So what if the West Street
site is rridi'd Costly? fn our
youth -orientated society, it's
time something was done to
make life more comfortable
for the seniors who have
helped create our present
affluent society. Surely no
one is gullible enough to
believe that the final figut e on
unimproved lots will not be
higher, with servicing, etc.
As I said when I wrote to
the paper over a year ago on
this same subject. 1 have no
personal axe to grind as we
have our own small home but
having reached the magic

behalf of my more reticent
contemporaries.
A copy of this letter is also
being sent, to the Town
Council. I feel there are
surely enough fair-minded
people on it that it will he
impossible for the O.H.C. to
bulldoze them into accepting
the suggested site.
Thank you.

Where in the world did Mr.

The- West Street and

residents could listen to the

and enjoy- the sunsets over
Lake Huron. Moreover, this
site is within walking
